Colin - Adding to ”bug” list: Flight Assignments. Apply to these
races *
(all races) will not work. The program stops working.
Martin - I’m preparing for ”Rikskval” and is working with
all the
qualification series right now…… In region 5 I combined 3 series
with
different flighsettings. It worked allright (1.93sat ->).

Subject: [sailwave] Flights scoring
Hi, Colin.
I have some questions about flight racing:
- In a round robin series, where all boats remains in the same flight, is
it recomended to use ANY competitor field except the Flight field. Will it
be wrong to use the flight field?
- I’m going to combine (merge) several (4) weekend-Round robin series into
one “year overall” series. Boats will change flight assignments from
one
weekend series to another, based on the ranking after each race, but not
during the weekend round robin. Should I then use the flight field during
the weekend race too?
- In the Scoring system - Race Scoring - Tab in the Race tie resolution
field, should I check “None” for anyone Flight series? And what is
the
difference here between this and “allow multiple…” under Big
Events? And
what happens if I Check one or both?
- For a ISAF Olympic format, with one medal race, wil the last race be
scored double points when I’m checking the "the last race is a medal
race…" in the “finals and medal race” folder in
“scoring system”?
- In the “finals and medal race” folder in “scoring
system”, it is possible
to check several options. Does thiiiiis give me the option to combine AppLE
Add.C races and Olympic “medal race”? Rhat is: Can I have quals,
finals AND
medal race in one series?
- Is it still you goal to score all fleets in one file? Last weekend there
was a race witht several classes, where only one class should have round
robin flights, and the rest should be doing fleet racing. One of the fleet
racing classes was put together with the “round robin class” in one
file.
This class was set up as “start 3” and the round robin had start 1
and 2.
Even if the start 3 class had one race less than the round robin class,
it
worked just fine! Even when published! I didn’t use “scoring rules”,
but it
would have workked too! (Tested!) What is your reccomandation for this?
regards,
Martin
PS!
What is your opinion Ralph ?
Anyone else?

Hi Ralph,
By Summary I mean the Flight column in the main view and the series summary
when published. I could delete the flight field but something needs the
ability to have race values - and I’ve called it (the concept) a
“flight” -
it could be “fleet” or “flock” but we’d probably end up in
the same boat!..
Think of it like this:-
- All competitor fields except Flight have one value per competitor per
series so by implication they have the same value per race.
- The flight field is different from all other fields in that it can have
an explicitly different value in each race. Since there is only one
Flight
column in the series view I populate it with the current assignment i.e.
after 4 races it would show the race 5 assignment. I could delete the
Flight column I suppose but I think that the current assignment value is
useful. (?).
I’ve tried to emphasise this by showing Flight in a tab of its own using a
table showing the per race values/assignments. You can either set the
values/assignments by hand or use the flight assignment tool.

Not sure what you mean by summary.
I had been planning to recommend that the flight column is totally deleted
to avoid confusion.
Have you added something that I have not found yet??

Martin, Anders et al
The latest incarnations of Sailwave try to make “Flight” a
field/concept
that is only used for assignments on a per race basis as the series
progresses. If you are doing Round Robin use any field you like - e.g.
Fleet as Ralph suggested. You can use the Flight field if you wish but
it’s easier to use Fleet or something else because the user interface
actually tries to get in your way a little bit now(on purpose). i.e. in
Sailwave speak, if you’re doing an App LE Add C type of event then you
have to use the “Flight” field - it’s the only one that allows
per race
assignments - that’s what “Flight” means in Sailwave - a competitor
attribute that can have a per race assignment. For everything else it’s
easiest to just ignore it.
When using the Flight field in this way, the Flight column in the summary
shows the current assignment.

Hi Martin - what a coward you are ;-))
For some reason, this latest description now seems very clear!!
I think the latest versions might eventually be what you are looking for - 1
file for each regatta &
1 file for the rankings & re-assignment. Suggest you wait for my Help file.
For this weekend
Open the Big Events tab in the scoring system and tick both options.
Ignore the options in the Finals & Medals races tab
Set up your starts for red v blue, green v white etc
In the past, we have all got confused between flights automatically assigned
by SW (& displayed in
the race columns) & the flights column.
The two are NOT the same!!
To set up the colours for your competitors, the simplest method is to
populate the ‘fleet’ field
which is then used for setting up race starts.
SW has an automatic seeding option which can be used to populate a field
with colours.
This is a little more involved & I have not written the help notes yet.
I seem to remember your regattas being quite large.
If this is the case, I would certainly prepare my data in Excel (incl
fleet/flight colour) & then
import into SW - MUCH MUCH quicker

Ralph

Hi, Ralph!
Well, I’m not sure if I dare to tell… I’ve tried to explain earlier, and
it made a lot of
confusions…
Anyway, This weekend will consist of 6 races in a round robin system: I.e.
the boats stays in the
same flights.
So, for this weekend Round robin will do.
But, this weekend is also a part of a total ranking. The ranking consists of
4 weekend races. Flight
assignments for the 2.nd weekend race is based on the results from the 1st
weekend race. Also the
2nd weekend race is a round robin, BUT we merge them to get a TOTAL. This
total will be the ranking,
and it will form the basis for flight assignments for the 3rd weekend race…
Well, if you think we’re crazy in Norway, I’m sure Anders do the same in
Sweden…
Anyway, the urgent is a round robin!

Hi Martin
Which flights system are you using?
Round Robin, where boats stay in same flight throughout the
regatta
AddC where flights are re-assigned each day

Thanks Colin
That’s one of my “Actions for Colin”
I have been ‘wrestling’ with how to do Assignments to Finals
fleets.
Current options don’t allow for variable numbers, ties go into higher
group.
The solution (after using a lot of grey cells) is DON’T use the
Flight
Assignment tool!
The finals series is scored separately so we need a field to score
on.
I have used the seeding tool to populate the Flight column which can then
be
amended manually if required.
My notes will probably ask for some sort of ‘Select Competitors’ window
with
a move up/down facility but at least for now, we have a practical
solution

Ralph

Trying to get it finished in the next week or so
