1.57 released

Hi,

Sailwave 1.57 has been released and can be donwloaded from the web site.

Major change is the ability to define starts in Edit+Race - the sail number
wizard and Edit+Result react to the starts to guess the next place and/or
start time. Lots of refining needed but it's a start.

Anders. This release can score the Europeans with the exception that DNF
will be all competitors in series + 1. Will tweak that ASAP.

Regards,
Colin J

PS: My Nacra F18 is for sale - £7000 for quick sale - immaculate condition -
stainless steel chute, beach trolley, cover, only 1 year old. Sail number
140. Cost £10,300 a year ago. 01792 405123.

Hi Colin,

Great work! Did you have any of the work done on the start time input before my e-mail, or did you manage to do all that in the time since?

One question. I've noticed that the results window now shows times in the format: "Start-Finish". Is that intentional? Is there a way to display the "elapsed" time, or just corrected?

Thanks again!

Regards,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Thanks. I've been working on start for 3 or 4 weeks; has always been part of
the plan. Still lots to do but the basics is there. Nothing ripples
through to publishing yet and many more start specific fields are needed
like course length etc. The important thing is that the Sailno wizard and
thEdit_Result react to the start data and that seems to work fine. It
means now that the SailNo wiozard is a lot more secure about picking the
correct start time. Other extensions that need
to be done are to allow the start time to be sepcific ed as +n minutes - so
that onlt the first need be set and the ability to update all the competitor
start times when scoring if the start time is changed... etc etc.

The start-finish will be displayed if you're viewing recorded results and
the result has been recorded as a start-finish time. Is it getting in the
way...?

Regards,
Colin

I like that idea. Falls under the category of "nice to have".

I wouldn't say it gets in the way. It just looks kind-of ugly (really ugly when you forget to calculate, and those numbers end up in the published data  ). I just switched it to corrected time, and it doesn't take up as much of the screen. Perhaps it provides value to some other groups, but for us, the start times in the spreadsheet don't have any value since they are the same for each fleet. All we are interested in are the "Finish" times (for double checking our entry). I think this is just one of those annoying "user preference", but not "functional" things.

Thanks again for all your work on this. I'm trying to get the other scorers in our club to agree to switch to Sailwave. Once I get them convinced, we'll get your £60.

While we're on the topic, do you do all the development work yourself, or do you get help from others? Most of my background is in Unix programming environments, but if there's any way I can contribute, please let me know.

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

In hindsight I thik you're right - try it now (redownload 1.57). I'll add a
specific viewing option for Start times whoch'll be useful to make sure
they're all set up correctly.

Thanks for the Partnership consideration. Sailwave is written in Clarion
(www.softvelocity.com) on a windoze platform. I used to work on Unix when I
was in academia (cog science) but that was a while ago now. Hope to have a
proper plug-in capability as some stage using DLLs or COM.

When entering new entries, I find it slightly awkward having to use
the mouse to select the drop down box for "Boat Class" with the
mouse. Is it not perhaps possible to allow this field to be selected
by using the "Alt + Down Arrow" like most other applications do, then
also allowing a quick selection by typing the first letter of the
boat that you want.

Hi Terry,

You should be able to tab to the class or click Alt+o to get there and then
press the down cursor key to drop the list and move around it - then Enter
to select. Just tried it here and it seems OK (1.57). Does that not work
for you?

Yep, tabbing and using down arrow works, thats great, guess old
habits die hard and therefore "alt+down" did not work.

Colin, I downloaded V1.57 and opened a file created in V1.55. After
double-checking results from V1.55, I noticed that ties were broken
differently. I see that you have removed the "old appendix A 8.2 check box
(I don't know if that was there in 1.56). I had checked the "new " A 8.2
box ("who had the best recent scores") box in 1.55, but when I opened the
series in 1.57 it is unchecked.

Also, there appears to be a bug in file + save series as... When I try to
save an old series with a new name, no matter what name I give it, it seems
to be saved as "Sailwave Files V1.blw". And, instead of being saved in the
directory I specified, it is saved in the parent directory.

The heading in the Rating column reads "RatingF" (which has been there in
other versions) and the heading in the column which used to be labeled "Pts"
is now labeled "Nett"???

One last thing, I like the work you've done on the sail number wizard, but I
can't figure out the relation with race distance in the edit race window and
in the edit fleets window. I use the ones in edit fleets and it works fine,
but I can't see what race distance in edit race does.

Every time I start Sailwave (1.57 using Win98) I get a message
saying:

Rating file folder C:\Program Files\Sailwave\Ratings does not exist -
setting to default.

This also happens when going into Global options. I have tried
changing the directory to c:\temp but get the same message up again.

Any ideas?

Terry

series in 1.57 it is unchecked.

It should stick once ticked in 1.56 or 1.57. I forgot to warn about it.
The property bar is now fairly useful and can at a glance tell you how
things are set up. You can also double-click on an item in the property bar
to take you to the appropriate place to edit it. Apologies for the
inconvenience caused.

Also, there appears to be a bug in file + save series as... When I try to
save an old series with a new name, no matter what name I give

labeled "Pts"
is now labeled "Nett"???

I'll check the rating column but Nett is correct because there will soon be
a total column too -Pts was too ambiguous - is it Nett ot Total points was a
common question.

One last thing, I like the work you've done on the sail number

Edit+Race distance ould be used if not overidden with the fleet distance.
If you're always scoring by fleet it will never get used. Not that the race
distance will be moved from the Fleet record to the start records soon. The
fleet records will be disappearing - and you will be able to score
separately using more generic facilities. At present it's all a bit of a
mush.

Colin

I've encountered the same type of problems - in 1.55 and 1.56 too. If
I try to "Save as" to a different file name, it always wants to save
it in a different directory as "Chip.blw" no matter what I try to
name it.

Colin,

Thanks for Edit+Race enhancement whereby one can define the start times
before entering the results.

I have noticed one little step backwards with the Sail No. Wizard; when
selecting which race to enter results against, if you have entered the date
of the race it is no longer shown. I found this useful as a double check I
had selected the correct day/date for the race at least

I plan to take a look at v1.58 in the next couple of days.

Kind regards,
Huw

Anders. This release can score the Europeans with the exception that DNF
will be all competitors in series + 1. Will tweak that ASAP.

Hi Huw,

There will be a lot more race fields soon so I thought it a bit arbitrary to
show the date - but - in hindsight I can see what you mean so I've put it
back!

I've also added an indication of whether or not there are any results for
the selected race yet (in case a race has the wrong date !).

Regards,
Colin

Colin,

Thanks for Edit+Race enhancement whereby one can define the start times
before entering the results.

I have noticed one little step backwards with the Sail No. Wizard; when
selecting which race to enter results against, if you have
entered the date
of the race it is no longer shown. I found this useful as a double check I
had selected the correct day/date for the race at least

I plan to take a look at v1.58 in the next couple of days.

Kind regards,
Huw

  Hi,

Sailwave 1.57 has been released and can be donwloaded from the web site.

Major change is the ability to define starts in Edit+Race - the sail
number
wizard and Edit+Result react to the starts to guess the next
place and/or
start time. Lots of refining needed but it's a start.

Anders. This release can score the Europeans with the
exception that DNF
