I have been trying to determine if our club should switch to SailWave to
for scoring our club series and regatta's and scoring some large
regattas as test case. It has great output and web publishing
facilities, and is very professionally done. However, I find that
entering finishes using the sail number wizard is little frustrating and
prone to errors so perhaps I'm using it incorrectly. We typically enter
finish positions from a sheet listing sail numbers in order of the
finish position which may or may not include a position number. The
things that I find frustrating are listed below.
1. When you enter a sail number the list of possibilities is derived
from all competitors rather than the unfinished competitors making it
easy to enter the same sail number twice. If you do inadvertently enter
a sail number twice, the finish its position changes and its a real
pain to correct. A second effect of using all boats in the list of
possibilities is that the list doesn't get any shorter for the later
entries, resulting in having to type more numbers. Probably ot a
concern with a fleet of 10 boats, but definitely a concern with a fleet
of 100 or more boats.
2. When you are entering a sail number there is no way to tell where you
are in the finish order unless you have a good memory. Therefore if you
are interrupted and lose concentration while entering a finish. its easy
to lose your place and screw up the finish order which is then difficult
to fix. Combining the two screens (enter sail number and enter finish
position) would make it easier to know where your at.
3. Make it easier to fix the results when you mess them up. I think
this is on the to-do list. My solution would be to have up and down
arrows when you click on a position in the main view. Each arrow click
moves the finish up or down one position. You could also use the double
click position screen and fix the results based on a change in the
position number. i.e. Re-number all finisher to remove the old finish
number and then add one to all finish position equal to or greater than
that new finish and insert the new finish.
4. We also have a qualification rule for our club races. Our SI's read
- "Unless a class a designated percentage of races for qualification, a
boat must qualify as a starter in at least 70% of the races to qualify.
The best 70% of her races shall be used in determining final series
standings". i.e. the percentage could very by class, although in
practice it is 70% (rounded down) for all classes.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the detailed feedback. I can see how to tweak the SailNo tool to
sort out your frustrations and the qualification profile is on the list. I
will be getting to them fairly soon and also the position rearranger because
I've promised it to somebody by mid May.
When you say that the number of discards change per class - if that class
translates into a Sailwave fleet - then Sailwave handles this
(Edit+Fleets+Edit). What is not possible is to have classes within a fleet
to have different discard profiles. i.e. every boat in the same race for
the same prize must have the same discard profile. I can't see how it could
otherwise work...?
Regards,
Colin

Hi Dave,
The uploaded v1.43 deal with some of your issues and a qualification
facility is on the list (in the interim it can be done by setting a very
high value for DNC). Please get back to me of you feel the SailNo wizard
needs more work.
