Adding Nationality to results

I am setting up a nationals and want to display the Nationality of
competitors in the results. I have added it when entering the
competitor details but cannot get it to show on the main screen or
the competitor list. Can anyone advise how to do this please?

Hi Alstair,

The Nat column can be displayed and/or published by double-clicking

columns on the tool bar and then finding Nat in the list displayed
and again double-clicking. When the window pops up there are two
check boxes, check both, then click OK. Before exiting the the list
of fields you may want to adjust where the Nat column appears on the
screen, I usually place it before the SailNo column, but that is
personal preference.

FYI - it is possible to display the Nat flag on published

information. This is configured on the second table of the Series
set-up window.

Kind regards,
Huw

It’s interesting to note that the National field was probably created to display national flags when publishing the results but it can be used to display other small images such as Provincial flags, State flags, Club burgees, Class logos, etc. You just need a FTP site to store the image and contents of the National field match the image names.

Hi Peter,

Very good tip. If anyone else has done the same thing for please let

us know.

For everyone's information if you find a World Sailing / ISAF member

national authority country code missing let Jon or Colin know so it
can be added. Also there are a few additional codes already
available, showing the UK origins of Sailwave, such as ENG, NIR, SCO
& WAL.

We've used the "nationality" to display yacht club burgees as well as
national flags.

In case ppl are not aware (I often forget about it) there is another more generic way to do this sort of thing as well using the column “format” tab. It allows you to specify some HTML and embed the field (column) value and any other field values in it. The hardwired mechanism for flags and Sailor IDs preceded it and I left them for backwards compatibility but the format mechanism makes them redundant (the Sailwave website could have just had a set of flags for reference if needed). The hardwired mechanism also helps a little when publishing more than one link but not enough to stop me feeling ‘untidy’ about it

e.g.

Helm under crew in same cell (helm column format):-

*
CrewName

But you don’t need to display the native value of the column at all:-

Helm under crew in same cell (other column format):-

HelmName
CrewName

Sail number in blue without using a style and constant across all styles but more text in file (sailno column format):-

*

Clickable link that fired up in a new tab and displays a thumbnail sponsor logo that is in (the URL to) the sponsor field (sponsor column format):-

sponsor

Etc etc - using a combination of CSS and HTML you can achieve a lot. The CSS can refer to classes defined in the style (or effect).

Just for clarification, does using these concepts the

Correction to my original:-

I’m unsure of the field names are case sensitive - it needs adding to the tip for the format field. I’m also unsure what happens re: interation with the hardwired Nat and SailorId machanisms…

Hi Malcolm,

No, when you edit a column in Sailwave, there is a format tab to define its format. Bu defauly it’s blank which just means output the value of the column as input by the user, but, you can write HTML (anything actually but only HTML makes sense usually) and embed the value of the column in that HTML and any other columns (see previous examples). It’s very powerful but little used. A generic form of the flags and sailor id hardwired facility.
