Hi Alan,
The new 2014 NHC has not been finalised yet and is still being fine tuned.
The principle is that new ratings are calculated as previously. Then the standard deviation is calculated for the new ratings. Those outside a predetermined deviation are then classified as Extreme performers. These are then ignored and the calculations redone on the remaining boats.
Each rating is then adjusted by a percentage based on whether they were a standard or extreme performer and whether their adjustment is positive or Negative.
These percentages are still to be finalised.
The ratings are then realigned so that the average of the base ratings for the finishing boats is the same as the average for the new ratings. This realignment method is still under discussion as in the extreme case of a single boat finishing this realignment specification would mean that the finishing boats rating gets set to its base rating (Start of series rating) but no other boats would change, A solution put forward is to not change the ratings unless some predefined no of boats finish say 3 or 5 as an example
Now as Sailwave can support virtually any personal handicap system using an Excel Template - I have produced a template which works to the current latest thinking for the new NHC. This can be downloaded from
https://dl.dropboxusercontent. com/u/220425/SWNHC3.xls
In the template you will find some boxes where you can experiment with different settings
Make sure you edit the template if you want it to work on all future calculations
You can however change it for a particular series by changing it for race 1 and pressing F9 to recalculate the spreadsheet.
What I suggest is that you create a folder named NHC2014 within the Templates directory
and then point the custom templates directory in the Global options to use this directory e.g.
This way you can switch between the 2013 and the 2014 calculations by simply changing the directory of the Templates
To use the template simply select NHC Club mode and Ext/Debug mode
If anyone has any comments are suggestions please let me know while there is some chance of changing it.
Make sure you are using the latest SWHelper File
Which has already been posted here on the forum version 1.3.2
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/220425/SWHelper.EXE
This file goes in the same directory as your Sailwave.exe file.

Hi Huw
Do you know what revisions are going to be made to the RYA NHC calculations please? Are any details published yet? - I can’t see anything on the RYA web site.
Thanks if you can help.

I anticipate the next official release of Sailwave to be in February/March time frame and include the revised RYA NHC handicap calculations. It might also include some other functionality that has been discussed - the capability to specify which races in a Sailwave to use to produce a set of series results from.
