Adjusting handicaps to make results more equitable

Hi Jon,

Thanks for your quick reply. I am ok with changing the ratings as you indicated.

Our PRO asked: “Can you use Sailwave to adjust the handicaps for boats who completed 12 races to make them more equitable? Let me know

We have a series that runs from May - October and we use the 12 best races (of up to 20 or so ) of the series to score the series. Some boats are consistently way out front.

The intent is to adjust handicaps one-time for the upcoming series in an attempt to better ‘level’ the playing field.

Can we use the BCR info to facilitate this?

I looked at the info regarding NHC. Hmmm, lot of stuff.

Do you recommend we go the NHC route?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

NHC in its standard form is a progressive / personal handicap originally developed for cruisers and it adjusts automatically after each race. However the implementation within Sailwave allows you to customise it to perform however you wish. Having said that it is a bit of an overkill for what you say you would like to do.

You could use the BCR’s from the series and average them - you may want to normalise them back so that the average of the new ratings is the same as the average of the original ratings. There are many methods of determining a new rating - some of the members of the forum have a lot of experience in this and I’m sure some of them will be happy to advise you.

I was looking at the Laser Masters Worlds 2013 results page:

http://jpvm.org/results/2013/Laser_Masters_Worlds/Results.htm

I noticed it was using Sailwave 2.13.3 - is this available?

It also contained the “Prizes” information for the regatta. Is this feature available in the current beta (2.12.3) ?

Please can you confirm that Sailwave “saves” the “Setup” values in the Registry on the local computer.

Hi Pete,

The latest official release of Sailwave is 2.9.7 but there is a

newer beta release 2.12.3 available as you are aware. The release
being used at the Laser Masters is the latest development release
that has been made available for testing to a few people. The main
reason for using it at the Laser Masters was it has additional
functionality available for checking ISAF Sailor ID’s and the
various Laser World Championships were good testing grounds with
someone doing the scoringwith a good understanding of the software
and that it might still have issues.

I anticipate the next official release of Sailwave to be in

February/March time frame and include the revised RYA NHC handicap
calculations. It might also include some other functionality that
has been discussed - the capability to specify which races in a
Sailwave to use to produce a set of series results from.

Sailwave has Prizes functionality available in version 2.9.7 but the

utility, Sailwave Prizes produced by Jon Eskdale provides
additional flexibility and can be downloaded from

Huw,

If a future release of Sailwave can verify ISAF IDs will it also be able to verify the competitors current ISAF Sailor Classification. This would be a useful facility.

Gordon,

Currently it is only for checking ISAF Sailor ID's but Jon may be

able to extend for classification. The work on Sailor ID’s is so
events which have to send results to ISAF can do so easily and if
Sailor ID’s are not correct the upload fails.

Hopefully Jon will answer more fully.

I would be interested to know why classification info would be

useful as I have not needed it.

I have a major championship for off shores in Ireland which use classification for the crews.

We had a complaint that some boats had wrongly classified crew numbers and this may have assisted to check at and before the regatta.

Gordon,

Currently it is only for checking ISAF Sailor ID's but Jon may be able to extend for classification. The work on Sailor ID's is so events which have to send results to ISAF can do so easily and if Sailor ID's are not correct the upload fails.

Hopefully Jon will answer more fully.

I would be interested to know why classification info would be useful as I have not needed it.

If a future release of Sailwave can verify ISAF IDs will it also be able to verify the competitors current ISAF Sailor Classification. This would be a useful facility.

The latest official release of Sailwave is 2.9.7 but there is a newer beta release 2.12.3 available as you are aware. The release being used at the Laser Masters is the latest development release that has been made available for testing to a few people. The main reason for using it at the Laser Masters was it has additional functionality available for checking ISAF Sailor ID's and the various Laser World Championships were good testing grounds with someone doing the scoringwith a good understanding of the software and that it might still have issues.

I anticipate the next official release of Sailwave to be in February/March time frame and include the revised RYA NHC handicap calculations. It might also include some other functionality that has been discussed - the capability to specify which races in a Sailwave to use to produce a set of series results from.

Sailwave has Prizes functionality available in version 2.9.7 but the utility, Sailwave Prizes produced by Jon Eskdale provides additional flexibility and can be downloaded from https://sites.google.com/site/eskdalesite/

I noticed it was using Sailwave 2.13.3 - is this available?

It also contained the "Prizes" information for the regatta. Is this feature available in the current beta (2.12.3) ?

Please can you confirm that Sailwave "saves" the "Setup" values in the Registry on the local computer.

You should not need to put file through html editor to remove links,

just switch the option to publish links off and republish results.

Select '*Series properties*' and then the '*Publishing* '

the the ISAF id if published and the Helm name should not have

Happy New Year to Everyone - back from my Cornwall Christmas break

Huw is correct in that if you don’t want the hyperlinks published then do as he suggests although it is nice to have the hyperlinks there.

The reason they are hard to read in your case is because of the custom CSS you are using. If you modify you custom CSS you can change the colour and hence make it easy to read.

The very last line here will change the colour of the hyperlinks - so choose a colour that is readable such as shown below

.caption {color: navy; text-align: center; padding: 3px; font-weight: bold;}
h1 {font-size: 1.8em; color:red;}
h2 {font-size: 1.6em; color:blue;}
h3 {font-size: 1.2em; color: #000066;}
p {text-align: center;}
th {background-color: #0055aa; color: #ffffff;}
a {color: #0000ff;}

Thanks Huw and Jon for the responses.

"it is nice to have the hyperlinks there" - not in this case, as most of our sailors aren't registered with ISAF, and the links pointed to DOB, i.s.o. ISAF ID, for some reason.

I did try the change to the CSS - does improve the legibility.

I tried Huw's suggestion, but it didn't work, probably due to the 2.9.7 / 2.12.3 incompatibility, back to html editor!

    Hi Pete,

    The latest official release of Sailwave is 2.9.7 but there is
    a newer beta release 2.12.3 available as you are aware. The
    release being used at the Laser Masters is the latest
    development release that has been made available for testing
    to a few people. The main reason for using it at the Laser
    Masters was it has additional functionality available for
    checking ISAF Sailor ID's and the various Laser World
    Championships were good testing grounds with someone doing the
    scoringwith a good understanding of the software and that it
    might still have issues.

    I anticipate the next official release of Sailwave to be in
    February/March time frame and include the revised RYA NHC
    handicap calculations. It might also include some other
    functionality that has been discussed - the capability to
    specify which races in a Sailwave to use to produce a set of
    series results from.

    Sailwave has Prizes functionality available in version 2.9.7
    but the utility, Sailwave Prizes produced by Jon Eskdale
    provides additional flexibility and can be downloaded from
    https://sites.google.com/site/eskdalesite/

    Kind regards,

    I was looking at the Laser Masters Worlds 2013 results page:

    http://jpvm.org/results/2013/Laser_Masters_Worlds/Results.htm

    I noticed it was using Sailwave 2.13.3 - is this available?

    It also contained the "Prizes" information for the regatta.
    Is this feature available in the current beta (2.12.3) ?

    Please can you confirm that Sailwave "saves" the "Setup"
    values in the Registry on the local computer.

Hi Huw

Do you know what revisions are going to be made to the RYA NHC calculations please? Are any details published yet? - I can't see anything on the RYA web site.

Thanks if you can help.

Hi Alan,

The new 2014 NHC has not been finalised yet and is still being fine tuned.

The principle is that new ratings are calculated as previously. Then the standard deviation is calculated for the new ratings. Those outside a predetermined deviation are then classified as Extreme performers. These are then ignored and the calculations redone on the remaining boats.

Each rating is then adjusted by a percentage based on whether they were a standard or extreme performer and whether their adjustment is positive or Negative.

These percentages are still to be finalised.

The ratings are then realigned so that the average of the base ratings for the finishing boats is the same as the average for the new ratings. This realignment method is still under discussion as in the extreme case of a single boat finishing this realignment specification would mean that the finishing boats rating gets set to its base rating (Start of series rating) but no other boats would change, A solution put forward is to not change the ratings unless some predefined no of boats finish say 3 or 5 as an example

Now as Sailwave can support virtually any personal handicap system using an Excel Template - I have produced a template which works to the current latest thinking for the new NHC. This can be downloaded from

https://dl.dropboxusercontent. com/u/220425/SWNHC3.xls

In the template you will find some boxes where you can experiment with different settings

Make sure you edit the template if you want it to work on all future calculations

You can however change it for a particular series by changing it for race 1 and pressing F9 to recalculate the spreadsheet.

What I suggest is that you create a folder named NHC2014 within the Templates directory

and then point the custom templates directory in the Global options to use this directory e.g.

This way you can switch between the 2013 and the 2014 calculations by simply changing the directory of the Templates

To use the template simply select NHC Club mode and Ext/Debug mode

If anyone has any comments are suggestions please let me know while there is some chance of changing it.

Make sure you are using the latest SWHelper File

Which has already been posted here on the forum version 1.3.2

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/220425/SWHelper.EXE

This file goes in the same directory as your Sailwave.exe file.
