Aliases Documentation or Tutorial

Can someone point me to documentation for using aliases? I have tried to find information via the web and the website, but not having any luck. The ABYC manual refers to aliases but really does not indicate how to use them.

Thanks,

Tom Owen

I don't think there is any documentation. I learned by noodling around
(and I am certainly no expert!).

What an alias does is to take a finish time or position (NOT scored
points) and use that to score a boat in another "fleet/class." To me
this only makes sense when you have finishing times or you are going
from a large fleet/class to a smaller fleet/class.

Example - You have Laser results and you want to know how various
masters categories would have scored HAD THEY RACED BY THEMSELVES. For
Master boats assume your boats have finishing positions of 1, 8 and 16.
When you create aliases, assign them to a new Master fleet/class and
then rescore, your alias boats will have finishing positions of 1, 2 and
3 in the Master fleet/class. Your original fleet/class results will not
change.

You need to turn on aliases under Setup|User interface. When you do that
there a menu item for creating aliases under Edit|New Competitor
Aliasing ...

Create a simple race with 5 or 6 boats and play around. I (or others)
could probably provide an example but I think you are better off just
playing around a little. The important thing to understand is that your
alias boats need to be assigned to a fleet/class and will be scored as
if they are the only boats in that fleet/class. You cannot take the
POINTS for a boat in one fleet/class and transfer the points to another
fleet/class. Only finishing times and positions transfer to the aliased
boats.

Hi Tom

There is a video of how to setup Aliases to allow dual scoring - It is one of the first ones I did and there is no sound but hope you will find it useful. This one is demonstrating how to do dual scoring with conventional handicap and the RYA progressive/personal handicapping system NHC

Hi Jon,

I want to set up aliases to allow dual scoring of a race series with PY conventional handicap and NHC progressive but I’m stumped at present.

The help video you mentioned in an earlier message on this group (see below) doesn’t load for me. It returns a message saying I need Adobe Flash player, which I have. I assume the link is broken. Can you please send me an updated link?

Many thanks

It is meant to use flash but fall back to HTML5

If you still have a problem I’ll try and produce a Youtube version when i get home.

Hi Jon,

I was able to view the video on another computer (but not my Blackberry) so problem solved–another bloomin’ internet mystery!

Thanks,

Ian
