Another basic question

Hi.

Apologies for another basic question. Despite quite a lot of trial and error I cannot get SW set up to produce the “package” of results that I want.

Perhaps it’s best If I describe what I am aiming at :

  • A five race series
  • Results on both Open ( elapsed time) and Corrected ( IRC Handicap ) bases
  • Results for separate sub fleets such as rookie skippers, Classes I & II, J Boats
For practice I have set up a series using the results from our 2007 event.

I have set up columns for boat name, boat type, skipper, sail number, rating, and class. The latter has either a 1 or 2 entered for each competitor.

I have entered the contestants and the finish details without a problem. I have set up different scoring systems for elapsed and corrected calculation.

When the data is scored it produces results correctly according to which scoring system has been selected.

Initially I did have a problem ( see yesterdays post ) in displaying all the appropriate info in the published results, ie finish times, elapsed times, corrected times. But I think I have sorted that out by making the appropriate selection from the Options tab in Publish – Results.

It’s about here that I come unstuck.

Issue 1

When published the Overall results do not show in rank, ie with the leader at the top down to tail end Charlie at the bottom. Nor is there a column showing 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.

By contrast the individual race results are shown in rank.

Issue 2

I can’t work out how to calculate and display separate results for the various sub fleets, ie Class I & II, J Boat etc. I have tried various selections and permutations in Scoring Rules without success.

Any help gratefully received.

The printed / html output uses the screen displays current ranking
(produced by clicking on the relevant column header tab - so you can,
for example, look at results for the latest race or the overall
series) but it seems that you do not have that column displayed so go
to the View Columns (I think - haven't got SW open on this PC) to see
what columns you wish to display on-screen and in print

Issue 2

I can't work out how to calculate and display separate results for

Have you had a play with Aliases yet? You can set up aliased
competitors that have their results scored in totally different ways,
which may be the way to do it if the usual 2-level scoring is
inadequate - it's what I use to score the same set of results under PY
handicap and a different Personal Handicap scheme.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. With your advice I can now sort out the ranking.

I have also now worked out how to produce sub fleets. I first select Score Groups Separately in Score Series and pick an appropriate grouping field. Then when I publish I make the appropriate selection in Include These Scored Groups.

Obviously this is real basic stuff. I think it took me so long to figure out because when I first set up my practice file using last years results I mucked around with column names. So when I made a selection in the Score Series grouping field of say Class what I was actually bringing in to play was something like Boat Type. As a consequence the options in Include These Scored Groups made no sense.

A classic case of GIGO. Once I looked hard at the other examples of series results it finally dawned on me. Now I can go back to bed!

Thanks again.

Whilst not strictly a scoring matter, all race officials and event organisers need access to reliable advance tidal data. In the UK this information is not freely available.

The following petition is doing the rounds: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Tidetable-data/

I have signed, and would invite all UK residents or British citizens to consider doing so

Great idea

This was discussed at the recent RYA Racing meeting, I think it was one of the actions taken away
