Firstly, I'd like to say how brill I think sailwave is - very easy to use!

On to buisness...

We held the Bolton Sailing Club GP14 Open yesterday, and only today may have
noticed a bug.
It might just be me not understanding how the system works fully yet - it
was my first time using it in anger.

We split the competitors in gold, silver and bronze fleets and award prizes
to each fleet 1st,2nd and 3rd

This cutting of the final results shows all the fleets scored together...

18th Bronze 12433 Ed Thomas Neal Jackson WLYC DNF 15 15 30
19th Silver 13239 Dave Wilson Liz Wilson Bolton SC 23 19 16 35
20th Silver 13453 Phil Dutton Steve Ferrington WKSC 19 21 17 36
21st Silver 13457 Iain Wilson Katie Wilson Bolton SC 21 18 DNC 39
22nd Bronze 13307 John King David Barclay Bolton SC 22 24 18 40
23rd Bronze 12857 Stuart Bowler Philip Bowler Combs SC 20 20 DNC 40
24th Bronze 13026 Richard Whittle Alan Dawson Burwain SC DNF 22 19 41

If you notice that 12433 is 1st, 13307 2nd, and 12857 3rd in the bronze
fleet.
I hope you're still with me!

Scored for each fleet seperatly we get the following results...

Bronze Fleet - Sailed: 3 Discards: 1 Ratings: None
1st Bronze 12433 Ed Thomas Neal Jackson WLYC DNF 1 1 2
2nd Bronze 12857 Stuart Bowler Philip Bowler Combs SC 1 2 DNC 3
3rd Bronze 13307 John King David Barclay Bolton SC 2 5 2 4
4th Bronze 13026 Richard Whittle Alan Dawson Burwain SC DNF 3 3 6

You should notice that 12857 and 13307 are now the oposite way round.
I set up the fleets with default ratings/discards etc...

Is the way it should be, or a bug??

If you want the original sailwave file, contact me

Oh, I was using 1.43 beta 4

Thanks for any help

Hi Richard

This is not a bug -it's just a fact of life!!! The first set of results includes many boats not in included in the second. Whilst 1st place in the bronze fleet will always be worth 1 point it becomes a varying number of points when mixed in with the other fleets, this can produce varying results - as you've discovered. So which is right? - extracting the bronze results from the whole fleet or treating the bronze fleet as a seperate race - I've no idea!!!! (Blame the SIs for not making this point clear!!)
Hope this (sort of) explains it!

Ye gods, I thought I was being a bit equivocal when I released a
network management program I wrote as "This program is completely
unsupported and unwarrantied in any way - use at your own risk", but
that pales into insignificance compared to that write up!

I wonder what the "Borderland Database Engine" is and what it has to
do with a system that apparently uses MS Access!

Hi Richard,

This happens when you rescore by fleet rather than extract the results from
the overall results (which sailwave can also do - see later). Here's an
example. Two boats A and B comprise a small fleet with overall results:-

A 50 2 2 2
B 99 1 1 1

Scored overall then, A beat B. But their fleet results are:-

A 1 2 2 2
B 2 1 1 1

And so B beat A when *rescoring* by fleet.

If your SIs require extracted results then score across fleets then click on
the fleet column title to sort by fleet - sailwave will additionally sort by
finish position, giving extracted results.

Regards,
Colin

The install procedure of course is much simpler than Sailwave - I myself
don't want to try as it looks a little complicated for me - and I thought I
was a programmer!

I think that claims have been made that cannot be substantiated... !

Cheers,

Mark

....and to think, dear old Sinbad Zillwood Milledge, (late of
Langstone SC) the inventor of the Portsmouth Yardstick System,
originally used a modified slide rule and a pencil and paper!

Are we becoming more attached to our PC's than our boats? Bad news!
