Any boffins out there ?

I'm obviously doing something wrong in this download lark. I thought you just clicked on the file to download, in this case sw147b7.exe, saved it in the Sailwave Program files, and Bob's yer Uncle. But no, its sitting there alongside sw146.exe which is still running Sailwave. Am I supposed to delete sw146.exe? Shouldn't these (and other Sailwave files) be in a folder? Any boffins out there to enlighten me?

Regards
Keith

Hi Keith,

I'm obviously doing something wrong in this download lark. I
thought you just clicked on the file to download, in this case
sw147b7.exe, saved it in the Sailwave Program files, and Bob's
yer Uncle. But no, its sitting there alongside sw146.exe which is
still running Sailwave. Am I supposed to delete sw146.exe?
Shouldn't these (and other Sailwave files) be in a folder? Any
boffins out there to enlighten me?

The file you download is the installation file; i.e. the file that must be
executed to install the version of Sailwave it contains. So to install a
versiion of Sailwave, download the installation file to any old folder -
usually My Downloads which Windows sets up for you - and then execute it to
install sailwave itself. NB: when the download is complete, your browser
will usually show you a button to "open folder" or something - which brings
up the download folder for you so you can execute the downloaded file - just
saves you using MyCOmputer to navigate to thedonwload folder, although I
keep a shortcut to it on my desktop, which I find useful.

Alternatively, instead of downloading the file by hand, choose "Open" from
your browser when clicking on it and it'll do everything in one go for you -
i.e. download the file to a system folder (probably c:\windows\temp) and
then execute it.

I have started doing the latter, since it's a little less cufuffle.

For the record, Sailwave is not unusual in this respect, most software is
contained in self-extracting installatiions, for two reasons: the file is
compressed to be smaller in size and an installation usually consistes of
sub-folders and ancillary files etc etc.

Colin

Thanks for that Colin. I went for the Wizard and it went a treat.
