Race scoring shows that as non standard the old discards rule can be
applied by ticking the box below 8.1
I cannot get this to work, could someone help please

What do you mean by "old discards rule" ?

The series scoring tab has a check box labelled
"Include discards when applying 8.1"
Is this the box you are querying?

The include discards worked in my test data eg
Boat A: 2, 4, 1, total 6 net 3
Boat B: 3, 1, 2 total 6 net 3

A wins on 8.1: beat B in last race
B wins on 8.1 + discards: for a 1st, 2nd & 3rd (against 4th for A)

Initially, it did not work as I had ticked the box to only apply tie breaking to Finals races :frowning:

Yes you have given an example of what I cannot seem to get to work. As a new user I am still getting used to the system, which is very good. However I do not seem able to find the tick box you refer to regarding Finals races? Where is this please

Hi Francis

Click on the scoring systems icon in the toolbar

If you have not created any scoring systems, you should just see the “Default scoring system” highlighted

Click on the edit button, then the series scoring tab

You should now see the tick box.

I am using v1.87 so not sure if this was a bug in 1.84 which has since been fixed.

If you still have a problem in 1.87, send me your file direct & I will have a look at it for you

Thanks for your help. I have been using 1.84 and I had ticked the box correctly. However I have now loaded 1.87 and again when ticked to use discards to decide, it still shows what I believe as an incorrect result.

I am a new user and had begun to load in some results from a short series raced earlier in the year. This race from my manual records would give 3669 3rd place over 2123

Clearly I could easily be doing something incorrectly but I have attached this file for you to have a look at for me

Now I see where you are coming from!

The reason that boat 2123 is still third is because its best result is a 3rd & boat 3669’s best is a 4th

So under 8.1, 2123 will always beat 3669, whether you tick the box or not

The problem is not a bug in SW, but your interpretation of the “include discards …” tick box.

As you have identified, the ‘old’ tie break rule (pre 1997!) was to take the lowest discard.

In our club however, the new system caused us a problem

As is typical in club series, discards can be a very high proportion of total series races & in some of our series, two members could have only 1sts & obviously have never have sailed against each other (eg 10 races & 5 discards)

So to retain the principles of the new tie breaking method (& pacify those who did not like the new system anyway!) we agreed a compromise whereby when the new 8.1 was being applied, we included all race scores, including discards.

This also made sense as it favoured the club member who entered more than the minimum to qualify, but still allowed members who could not race every week, to qualify for the series.

Colin very kindly added the tick box option to include all races when calculating the number of 1sts, 2nds etc

Thanks for the explanation, yes we have the same problem with say 5 from 10 and had continued to apply the old rule

As you say I had misinterpreted the tick box and believed that this used the old discard rule

However for next season we will use 8.1 with the tick box as you use
