ASPN

Hi,

I have a todo entry to implement a ASPN rating system. ASPN is managed by
Nova Scotia Yachting Assoc. I have lost the associated email - can anybody
help? I've had a quick look at the NSYA website but I'm not clear about what
I was asked to consider doing...

Hope this will help it is in the 2003 ASPN - PHRF
Performance Handicapping Manual, on the NSYA web site under Handicapping.

Basis of the System

The Atlantic Speed Potential Number is simply an estimate of the potential
speed of a yacht, expressed as a percentage of the speed of a fictitious
"standard yacht". Thus the standard yacht has an ASPN of 100, and no
correction is made to her elapsed time. Stated differently, the NSYA
scratch yacht has a time correction factor (TCF) equal to 1.

A yacht assigned an ASPN of 95 has been judged to have a potential speed
only 95 % that of the standard yacht. This slower yacht is expected to take
longer to sail the course, so her elapsed time is shortened, by the
correction factor 95/100.

Similarly, a faster yacht with an ASPN of 110 has her actual time
lengthened, her corrected time being 110/ 100 times her elapsed time. Thus
the ASPN system is very simple to apply, particularly with today's computers
and scoring software. The time correction factor is simply ASPN/100.

The essential basis of the ASPN system follows the principles described in
Section 3. Because the aim is to find potential speed differences between
yacht designs, when sailed at their best, the ASPN for each yacht design is
established from race results of the best performing yacht of that
particular design.

The analysis of race performance and the consequent assignment of ASPNs is
the responsibility of Club appointed Handicappers, who collectively
constitute the NSYA Handicap Committee, together with an independent
Chairman. The Chairman is a Director of the NSYA, and is elected each year
at the NSYA Annual General Meeting.

The system depends on the quality of the data generated by the individual
Club Handicappers, who in turn rely on the help of their Race Officers in
determining those race results that are valid for analysis. It is
essentially an honour system, in which yacht owners also share the
responsibility and credit for its development.

ASPN has been used at most Nova Scotia Yacht Clubs for years.
We a Chester Yacht Club how have been racing for over 100 year most of them
using this handicapping method, to find out who in a handicap fleet wins.
There is a database of boats and there handicaps on the NSYA site. This
system allows us to give a class boat with modifications its own rating. If
a boat comes for out of province we just use a conversion form PIRF to ASPN
using a formula.

Maybe the system we use is different to yours.

We run a championship series for a number of fleets (herons, NS14s,
tasars, lasers etc); we then also run a handicap championship series for
each fleet; the method we are using is difficult to explain, but
essentially we use something similar to the ASPN method, but we average
it over the last 5 races of each boat.

We then use this over the entire season.using each boats best 75% of
finsihes

We look at the end of the year to see if every one is sailing to
their potential. If we find that one type of boat is doing above or below
their ASPN the rating is reviewed. Looking at a class of boats and how they
preformed with different crews in different areas, you are handicapping the
boat not the person sailing it. Now this dose not work very well with home
made boats that are one of a kind. Problems with rating are reviewed at the
end or in the middle of the season.

Basis of the System

The Atlantic Speed Potential Number is simply an estimate of the
potential
speed of a yacht, expressed as a percentage of the speed of a fictitious
"standard yacht". Thus the standard yacht has an ASPN of 100, and no
correction is made to her elapsed time. Stated differently, the NSYA
scratch yacht has a time correction factor (TCF) equal to 1.

A yacht assigned an ASPN of 95 has been judged to have a potential speed
only 95 % that of the standard yacht. This slower yacht is expected to
take
longer to sail the course, so her elapsed time is shortened, by the
correction factor 95/100.

Similarly, a faster yacht with an ASPN of 110 has her actual time
lengthened, her corrected time being 110/ 100 times her elapsed time.
Thus
the ASPN system is very simple to apply, particularly with today's
computers
and scoring software. The time correction factor is simply ASPN/100.

The essential basis of the ASPN system follows the principles described
in
Section 3. Because the aim is to find potential speed differences
between
yacht designs, when sailed at their best, the ASPN for each yacht design
is
established from race results of the best performing yacht of that
particular design.

The analysis of race performance and the consequent assignment of ASPNs
is
the responsibility of Club appointed Handicappers, who collectively
constitute the NSYA Handicap Committee, together with an independent
Chairman. The Chairman is a Director of the NSYA, and is elected each
year
at the NSYA Annual General Meeting.

The system depends on the quality of the data generated by the
individual
Club Handicappers, who in turn rely on the help of their Race Officers
in
determining those race results that are valid for analysis. It is
essentially an honour system, in which yacht owners also share the
responsibility and credit for its development.

I have a todo entry to implement a ASPN rating system. ASPN is managed
by
Nova Scotia Yachting Assoc. I have lost the associated email - can
anybody
help? I've had a quick look at the NSYA website but I'm not clear about
what
I was asked to consider doing...

Regards,
Colin J
