Austrian ranking system

As the name does not explain, this system is used almost everywhere in Europe except in Austria.

The formula 101+1000log(N)-1000log§ or 101+1000*log(N/P) gives a good solution for national or continental series, where competitors are not able to enter all regattas.

N is the number of competitors in a regatta, NOT the number in the series.

This system has no provisions for P>N, so when a boat is ranked as DNS or DNF for a regatta (when the regatta is a series, this code is used for boats ranked at least DNF, OCS, DSQ, and all others are DNC), the points must be equal to une number of competitors, hence scoring 101 points.

However, when Scoring systems > High Point / Austrian is selected (found the problem using 1.94 Build 27),

  • the default for DNF (extended to BFD, DGM, DNE, DNS, DSQ, OCS, RAF) is Boats in series +1 when Boats in Race + 0 is expected
  • the default for DNC is Boats in series +1 where 0 is expected. In addition, when only the DNF is modified in Scoring systems, DNC are not scored properly. With Boats A and B finishing 1 and 2, boat C DNF and boat D DNC, A is scored 578, B 277, C 101 (fine…) but D 764. However, overall rankings show 1. A / 2. B / 3. C / 4. D. the 'values in ‘Total’ and ‘Nett’ for boats ranked DNC appear to be negative… Same result when score for DNC is fixed to zero, but ‘Total’ and ‘Nett’ are giving more realistic scores.
    Next problem…

In addition to the 6-8 regattas on the calender, of which 2 or 3 are discarded, an additional race result may be included, as the highest score in any other international regatta. How can I introduce these scores in the system?

Colin,

No reaction on this issue.

Two problems for me

  1. Defaults for Austrian scoring should be set as DNF = number of boats in a race + 0 and DNC = fixed as 0
  2. I cannot enter results by points for import of one result in any other international regatta

Hi Phillippe, Sorry - browing SUG messages looking for bugs - didn’t spot this. WRT 1. that is the way Sailwave currently works - I agree its not brilliant - you can choose the points system but have to set up the codes youself. I agree is would be better if when you set a points system Sailwave optionally set some useful codes for you.

I’m not sure I follow 2 - why would you enter points directly…?

Colin,

You find on http://www.ffyb.be/results/BEL2007.pdf an example of the Excel table I’m using.

Rules are

  • 6 national regattas
  • the best points in any international regatta abroad are taken as 7th regatta.
  • best 3 out of 3 to 5 valid results, best 4 of 6 or more results.
  • ties are not broken
Sorry that I was not too brilliant this year, but the boat was bought in June and needed some improvements (removed 160 kg of ballast in excess after the last regatta).

I sailed 15/32 in the Russian Open, and 5/8 in Heart of Europe Trophy, best was Moscow, 430 points

Belgian Champion Pierre Ody won and Michel Genart was 7/8 in Heart of Europe Trophy.

To change for Sailwave, I made he ranking with the Belgian regattas, but I cannot import the points from the International regattas.

A further, more complicated rule is about regatta #6. As this is the Belgian regatta of an European circuit, participation is of high level, and result of nationals, scored with Austrian formula, are much lower than average (I was 24/25…). So most of the Belgian competitors prefer a Belgian ranking (for me, 4/5). But he helmsman of the first Belgian boat does not agree as he finished 3/25 (1022 points, better than 1/5, 800). So our complicated rule for this regatta is to take for this regatta the best of the points for national and international rankings. But I don’t expect Sailwave to be able to apply his rule, as this can also be done if I can enter the points instead of places for this regatta.

Two other bad problems, related to the European circuit. See http://www.microclass.org/results/EM07.html

  • Special rules are that only boats having sailed in a foreign country are ranked (but they are counted as competitors).
  • One major regatta, usually the World Championship, receives a coefficient. How can I apply this coefficient?
    Regards

Philippe
