Hi
Does anybody know how to get SailWave to calculate age group (eg U12, U14, U17 etc) from date of birth?
Is there a template for this?
Thanks for your help

I can't think of an automatic way but you could use the export to clipboard and then paste the clipboard into an empty excel spreadsheet.
Then using excel to create the age groups save as a csv and import into sailwave.
If it is only a few a may be easier to do manually but if there is a lot then the above will work.
If this is something you do regularly and with quite a few let may know and I'll write you a quick utility to do it.

Sailwave is a good sailboat scoring programme - it can do lots of things regarding race scoring, with various scoring options, e.g. handicaps or race timing.
However, it is not a general purpose database programme. Age groups would typically go into one of the optional columns, which only take text entries.
This would have to be done in an external app, e.g. excel, then imported.

We only need to do this about once a year, but we had the visiting fleet last weekend, and it was a right pain trying to work out whether each competitor was U12, U14 or U17 on the 1st January. If you could send me a utility for this so that we’re better prepared for next year, that would be great.
Many thanks

I haven’t tested this solution, but it seems like it should work.
Use the “Set Competitor Field” tool and set the Division to “U21” if the “Birthdate < 19910626”

If this could be incorporated into the main system it could be useful - not only for youth categories but also for the Master, Grand Master, Venerable Ancient Mariner categories that seem to flourish in some classes.

Hi: This may sound a bit simple minded but we work it out
beforehand. The Registrars are given a sheet with the age colour or
category and the associated range of DOBs. It is gospel never mind
what Coaches say! By the time I get the competitor list for entry
into Sailwave all I’m doing is entering Byte Red Fleet or whatever.
We’ve tried a one step data entry straight into SW but it is
difficult to catch mistakes ( more training required for
Registrars). Later I can sit in the relative peace and quiet of the
Committee boat and sort things out via a few phone calls to the
Club. Mind you the regatta is only about 130 boats unlike the vast
European regattas where any sort of automation would help. However,
the lookup paper actually works quickly for Registrars learn the
date ranges after a few minutes. We do the same thing for U18 and
U21s if we have them.
What we really need to automate is to have SW compare sail numbers
on boats with sail numbers on registration forms. I’m ever hopeful!

Kieran,
Have you selected the competitors that you want to apply the change
to? If not click the button ‘Select Competitors’ alongside the box
that initially says All competitors and this will give you the
option to select the competitors that you want to apply the change
to.
Note - it is important that the date in field containing DOB is in
format YYYYMMDD not any other date format otherwise you will not get
what you are expecting!
Kind regards,
Huw

Minor change but won’t you want “U21” where the birthdate is GREATER than 19910626 ?

Donald - I don’t disagree with you in that your method may be the easiest
However if you have a lot to check or calculate/modify this might be of interest. It is certainly an interesting exercise to see how it could be developed. It is using Excel and as such can be made to even have different age groups for different fleets which happens in reality!!
There is sample which you can download from this link have a play with it and see what you think
Download the AgeTest.zip file and extract the 3 files
Open the AgeTest.blw file with Sailwave
Then run the SWPH program included
Select the template file from the file menu to be SWPHage.xls (from the zip file)
Then click the “To Excel” button and that is it.
You see a Spreadsheet with all the AgeGroups calculated
You can modify the template file SWPHage.xls with different AgeGroups
This is in the Config worksheet
The Dates of Birth are in the Sailwave file in the PrivateNotes field but could be other fields if you change the config worksheet. Or use the tool - Set competitor field within sailwave to copy them to the PrivateNotes field. before you click the “To Excel”
Let me Know what you think - is it useful?
