Average points calculation

Parkstone Wayfarers award average points for OOD and safety boat
duties. We calculate the average by taking the sum of the best scores
for the number of races to count, divided by that number. Is there any
way to have Sailwave perform this calculation?

Richard

Hi Richard,

In the Codes tab of the scoring system window, edit the OOD codes and change
its method to match your requirement; I can't remember the method name
exactly, but it's there.

Sailwave seems to offer the following options:

   1. Average of (sum of points for all races)
   2. Average of (sum of points for non-DNC races)
   3. Average of (sum of points for non-discarded races)

Taking option 3, the average of the points scored for all
non-discarded races, and a series of scores as follows:

DNC DNC 1.0 3.0 AVG DNC 1.0 DNC AVG 2.0 DNC DNF 1.0
1.0 1.0 DNC DNC 2.0 1.0

10 races to count, so Sailwave takes the 8 best scores + 2 averages,
and calculates the average from those 8 best scores thus:

(1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1) / 8 = 10 / 8 = 1.25 (rounded up to 1.3)

Our system requires that the average is calculated from the best 10
scores, which doesn't seem to be possible with Sailwave :frowning:

Sailwave cannot use those otherwise it gets into a chicken and egg
situation. So it should use the 10 best non-averaged scored divided by 10.

Hi Richard,

Ignore my last email. I remember now - it was hard to implement because
you're calculating a score that may be discarded while trying to ignore
discards. I think what it does now is correct, none of the scores that
contribute to the OOD score are discarded. Doing it your way, some of the
scores used to calculate the OOD points will be then be discarded, so you
have not done what the SIs say which is to only include non-discarded
scores...! Perhaps you could use avarage of all non-DNC races...?

Presumably your says are to the ffect of: score the series ignoring OOD
scores; calculate the OOD scores based on the *currently* no-discarded
races. Score the series again - the OOD scores will be included and some of
the previously included scores will be discarded - resulting in OOD points
being calculated form discarded scores... What do your SIs actually say...?
Perhaps I can tweak something...

Yes.

situation. So it should use the 10 best non-averaged scored divided

by 10.

Yes, exactly, but I only seem able to get it to use the 8 best scores
with the "Average of (sum of points for non-discarded races)" option :frowning:

SI's at http://www.parkstonewayfarers.org.uk/pyc-results.shtml#scoring
"Average points are calculated by taking the sum of the best scores

So yes, we do potentially discard a number of those races
up to the number of averages (limited to two per series max). I agree
that this can be tricky to implement - I've previously done it using
Excel.
