Average Speed Calculation

Can anyone tell me how average speed is calculated as it doe not seem
to be correct. I am using Sailwave version 1.930605042134.

There are 4 fleets, same start time with fleet A&B racing a longer
course then C&D

Edit/Race/Starts for:
Fleet A/B has finishes recorded as finish time, start time =
18:00:00, Distance = 5.55 (blank so assumes nm), weighting = 1.00
(not using this), wind index = blank, course = the course info,
average wind strength = "Start 12, Mid 9.9, Finish 11", Wind
Direction = S.
Fleet C/D has everthing the same except for Distance = 4.15 and
different course info.

Boat 1 edit/result has an elapsed time of 0;36:17 (not sure why semi-
colon), start time of 18:00:00, finish time of 18:36:17, corrected
time = 0:29:32, Score = 1, Rank = 1, Rating = 73,

The average speed shows 9.178, and shows the same when published.
What am I doing wrong? I am getting a lot of inquires into how the
average speed is calculated and can not give the answer.

Robert

Hi Robert,

Sailwave takes the distance travelled and divides by the elapsed time to get
an average speed, so 5.5nm travelled in in about .6 hours will be about
9.2nm/hour or knots ... seems OK...?

NB: The ; is probably there because it was entered like that - I have got
into trouble in the past by changing the actual characters users' entered
for finihes, so I leave it alone completely now.

Regards,
Colin

Colin,

Thanks, I feel pretty stupid now. I was dividing by the elapsed time in minutes instead converting it to hours.
