Back calculated start times - cangaroo start

Hi ,

in Germany we are using "cangeroo start" with yardstick fleets in club
races - it is a system of back calculated start times under the
assumption, that all boats are finishing at the same time. The slowest
boats start first, the fastest boat last based on their individual
rating.
Is there any way to calculate these start times and create a start time
table in sailwave?

Hi Jan

In the UK, we call this a Pursuit race.

Sailwave does not have a facility to calculate start times but I have a spreadsheet which you may find helpful.

It is based upon RYA Portsmouth Yardstick system so not sure what handicap system you use in Germany

Have a look at it & please ask any questions

Regards

Ralph

Hi Jan,

Sailwave at present cannot calculate start times for a Kangaroo/Rabbit/Pursuit race.

However I do have an Excel spreadsheet that does so if you would like a copy, but I see Ralph has already beaten me to it.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Ralph,

thx.

we use Yardstick as handicap system similar to PY - value range from i.e. 80 to 120. The spreadsheet looks promising, I will try later.

Is there an easy way to get this loaded into Sailwave instead entering start times for each competitor?

You could look at the handicap program I still use which in its latest version has a start time calculator for Pursuit races (I love the term Kangaroo Start).

Haven’t actually tried to use the program this way yet, but generally it’s pretty easy to use.

We use Sailwave for our big regatta, but stick with this program for club racing.
