BCH

Hi All

I noted with interest that message 8188 suggested that Sailwave's BCH
feature may be enhanced.

Our local PHRF Fleet uses a variation of BCH that we call Estimated
Speed Potential Number (ESPN). ESPN is the handicap that would need
to be applied to a boat's elapsed time in order for the boat to finish
the race with the same corrected time as the median boat(we have some
simple guidelines to identify the 'median boat'). ESPN has been an
essential part of our Fleet's handicapping toolkit for many many years.

So, in light of the above, I'm wondering if there is any possibility
that a future release of Sailwave could provide the user with the
flexibility to tie the calculation of BCH to the median boat as
opposed to the boat that finished first...or for that matter, tie it
to the boat that finished third in a fleet of X boats (in other words
make it user settable).

I know that this item has been discussed back in 2002 when my
colleague and I worked with Colin to modify Sailwave to accommodate
the needs World Youth Sailing Championship taking place at the
Lunenburg Yacht Club in Nova Scotia, Canada. I haven't pursued the
issue since, mainly because I have access to dated scoring software
that does the ESPN calculation for me. But the time is fast
approaching when I (and many others like me in my PHRF area)will need
to switch to a more sophisticated tool such as Sailwave. As it stands
Sailwave already does everything I need....except for calculating ESPN.

I'd really appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, or comments.

Kindest regards:

Mike
