Beginners Guide to creating a Multi Fleet Regatta Scoresheet

Hello,

Some initial questions i asked on this subject were under a completely differnt Topic, so i thought i would start a new Topic to track the issues and answers so that others may find it useful in the future.

As still a relative newcomer to Sailwave, but getting more confident with the score sheets i have created which are for simple One Design racing, need to now plan the “jump” to fully immerse myself into the depth of Sailwave in that i need to consider how to set up a Sailwave Series to handle a regatta, where there will be Multiple type of craft including One Design, mixed Dinghies and Cruisers plus Classic yachts. The likely hood is that there will be one Committee Boat (maybe 2) .

We will probably run the same course for One Design and some other PY handicapped boats, with the Classic and Dinghies having totally different courses.

I have searched the web for advice on how to start this project and there is info out there from certain clubs but it does depend on having Access to their Templates etc, which i do not.

Also, Jon and Huw have kindly offered advice over the last 24 hours but i am still a little concerned about what this whole process will entail, and i am not looking forward to being in the Club House after the first day facing a number of Sailors with no scoring info to give them.

I also want to be in a position to try and document he process for other within the club so that we can all learn.

So this morning i tired to set about the initial set up and started on the Fleets parameter and became stuck straight away.

What is the difference from selecting Fleet as opposed to Class?

And then to the right of the selection box it indicates … and the value is… Edit Me, but what goes in here, is it the name of the yachts in the fleet like Dragon for example?

And then i realised that all the other fields in the Edit Scoring system fleet had been disabled.

Where can i find some documentation that explains this please

Thanks

John

Hi - I think the best definitions are

Fleet - A group of boats

Class - A type of boat

I know some users use Class where they really mean Fleet. And in many situations you can get away with this especially in simpler setups. But once you start getting NHC and other things involved you can get into trouble if you don’t user the above. I would always recommend that you use Fleet for a group of boats

Normally you would then specify the changes from the norm for the other fleets - something like below.

As it says above Ticked Inherit boxes mean the values are inherited from the parent scoring system

If you wish to change these then you untick the Inherit box for the group of features you wish to modify. This means that you inherit all the parent scoring features unless you untick the Inherit box

Jon,

Thanks,

OK I have gone with Class, so i will slowly build up some registration info for the One Design Class and then add a Handicapped class to see how things change.

What i noted was that when in the Edit Scoring System page i created a new F"fleet: and specified Class, then gave it a name e.g. Dragon… and saved and then went back to the main screen to input a couple of Dragon boat particulars and the first Dragon i input when i came to the Class field, i had to input the Class name again, it did not seem to remember that i had already specified a class in the other Scoring window… is this correct operation?

thx

John

Hi John

No - You need to use Fleet because it is a group of boats - so you will have a Handicap Fleet which will have different classes of boats

OK,

So first create a Fleet then within the Fleet create different Classes, say of One Design Boats

Then another Fleet of different Classes which will only have Handicapped boats.

Or have i misunderstood …???

John

No - Each one design will be its own fleet - so e.g. you would have a fleet for Laser and a fleet of Solo and a fleet for any other one design classes, and then may be a Fast Handicap fleet and a Slow Handicap fleet.

Jon,

Sorry for being a little dumb today… OK i have that, so i have some of the One Design Fleets set up.

Within our Regatta, we are likely to getting visiting boats that will also be in One Design they will be Ettes and FIfies, so we will likely have 4 Fleets of different One Design, in this arrangement does the Class parameter come into the equation at all?

John

The class will be within the handicap fleet

So you would have a fleet - handicap and then a class may be something like Merlin

Fleet vs Class

The RRS have slightly different usage and US English is, I believe,
slightly different from UK English.

The RRS have the group that sails together as a "class" with its
identity declared by the "class flag" for the start of that group (also
see RRS 26, last sentence). It also uses "class" when referring to
"class rules" so the usage is not rigidly consistent.

In the US I don't think I've ever seen the "group of boats starting
together" referred to as a fleet in official documents but that is more
about standard usage by sailors then anything rigid. The context usually
makes the meaning clear regardless of which term is used.

For local scoring in Calif. we change "Fleet" in Sailwave to be "Class"
and change "Class" to be "Boat type" as those terms are more commonly
used and understood by sailors here, especially with handicap racing.

I think this is a US vs UK English thing and you just need to be aware
of the Sailwave definitions that Jon gave.

Hi John,

I can't remember if you have found the following document as I

think you will find it helpful to your journey with Sailwave.

Mark Townsend’s Sailwave User Guide available from http://www.sailwave.com/download/sailwave/Sailwave_ABYC_User_Guide.pdf

Kind regards,

Huw,

Yes i did have a copy of that document, but when i started reading it i found that it referred to Templates that the club used, which i did not have access to, maybe i should have persevered a little more, I am having a short chat with Jon later to get me on the right road…

Thanks

John

Just to update everyone.

Had a chat with Jon on this whole issue, and it turns out that what i had prepared was not very far from working.

The areas i had to modify, were nearly all within the Scoring system options, which included :-

  1. For the boats which used timed race and handicaps i had not created the rating system correctly within the Edit scoring fleet, there is an option box called “inherit” which you need to pay attention to as in my case it was trying to score this fleet as a One Design, which were the other yachts entered but in other fleets.
  2. The other issue in the same context was that i had not loaded up or referenced a Ratings folder. the information can be downloaded from the Sailwave web site.
  3. The other area which needed attention was setting up the Race configuration correctly within the Edit Race options, under starts i needed to correctly configure how each type of yacht was being scored
  4. Within Edit Race i needed to create separate “Starts” for each Fleet and then within the Option configure the " Competitors in this start" correctly mainly this was to do with the Option “Finishes will be recorded as” option as in the Handicapped fleet they need to be set as Finish Time
  5. Then the other areas was within the Publishing options to make sure i knew how to Display time options etc for the Handicapped races.

Jon thanks for the time on this, the Learning still continues.

John

Further to my last response, i have one other question on the same subject:-

As i now have aSeries comprising of multiple boats some in classes other not, how can i selectively publish the Class column for certain fleets, or classes?

thx

John

Hello,

Apologies but i can i ask the last question again please ?

Can i selectively publish the Class field depending on Fleets for example?

thnx

John

Hi John,

You can specify which columns are published but you can’t specify individually for different fleets you would just get an empty column.

You could if you were feeling clever have an effect(javascript) remove the column
