.blw structure

Is there a published schema for the structure of the .blw file?

I want to write a (Java) processor to do a couple of things that SW currently doesn't do, and working out what the various labels mean in order to find the relevant information is daunting. A few hints might be fine.

Hi Malcom,

As I was told a few years ago the blw format is proprietary and liable to change in future versions.

However having said that the version that it was created with is in the .blw file so as long as you check this you should be safe, for current versions. If you want to give me an idea of what information you would like to use I should be able to help you or suggest an alternative message if there is a simpler alternative. Or may be I could convert the output to a format that you could use easily. Drop me a PM or a skype message or call.

Jon,

On a somewhat related issue - When publishing you can put a title to be
published. Every title you ever used gets saved, even the typos. Is
there a way that I can delete some of the options presented, basically
to take out the options which contained typos? If this was saved in the
BLW file I couldn't find it. What would be really great would be able to
present the scorer with pre-determined options at the start of a regatta.

One thing that is inconvenient about Sailwave is that the scorer has to
remember to set a bunch of options every time they publish race or
series results. It would be nice if there were some way to set that up
ahead of time. Example - for a long series per the rulebook you would
want to suppress DNC for races but display them for the series. That
means the scorer has to remember to switch that option on and off
depending on whether they are publishing race or series results. Doable
but inconvenient since the scorer (and even I) often forget to do that.
It usually gets noticed and fixed by re-publishing but that can be
embarrassing in the meantime.

Hi Art,

The titles are all in the blw file and the line will begin sertitle. It should be approximately line 63 of the file. The titles you use are only remembered for that particular blw file so different files will have different titles. You can just edit the blw file to remove them with a text editor if you want to get rid of some of them.

As for the options I guess I could have 2 presets that you could configure but these would be presets per blw and you would still need to remember to press the preset. Can you think of an easier/foolproof way?

I think having presets stored in the BLW file is actually optimal.
Normally, for a weekend regatta one would want to set that stuff up on
Fri. For a BIG regatta (which are usually the easiest to score) you'd
probably do that well ahead of time. The only thing that might be nice
is to have up to 5 presets but two would be better than none.
