Boat / Crew Performance rating or scoring

Hi All.

Has anybody out there implemented a scoring system that will take into account a boat / crew performance thought a series?

We normally race under PY but, would also like to have a rating / scoring system that would take into account boat/crew performance. In a similar fashion to golf where the handicap is weighted based on the ability of the player.

We would use this approach to keep the results close and keep the excitant going through a series.

I would be interested in who has implemented this and how it worked within Sailwave and indeed within a club series.

Hi Joe

I've done it with limited success. I calculate a helm/boat's rating based on the BCR's calculated by Sailwave. Then I run 2 sets of results, 1 kosher RYA PY and one based on personal handicaps.

Top sailors don't like it, cos they don't win anymore. It's difficult to know what to do with the very occasional sailor, who can get a massive personal handicap.

Originally I ran it over a season, but that meant that the sailors who turned up throughout the season won, however doing it over a short series can always throw up anomalies, for the sailor who sailed twice in the last series and did badly.

Overall I think it's worth doing, but it's not perfect

cheers
Tony

See my earlier post (+ others around it). Needs a bit of spreadsheet work for the BCR distribution calculation, but overcomes a lot of the automatic handicap adjustment problems.

Great, I think it would be worth the effort. We would naturally keep 2 sets or results traditional and Golf based.
I think the folks lower down the list would be enthused and encouraged to sail more often thereby improving their ability.
The success would be measured by these sailors complaining about the Golf system.

So has anybody got worked examples I could play with [yes now I am being lazy]

ECHO - used for cruiser racing in Ireland.

Progressive ECHO, used for regattas, changes a boats handicap after

every race.

As far as I know they use Sail 100 to score ECHO

This is the golf handicap system - the worse you do, the better your handicap gets. As Gordon notes, this system exists in Ireland for most cruiser handicap classes, and is called ECHO. The problem with coding it in a scoring system like sailwave is that it is very difficult to define the rules - or rather it’s easy to define the base rules, but not all the ‘outlier’ cases - e.g. if I wrap my spinnaker around my forestay and finish an hour after everyone else, do I get a 25% improvement in my handicap?

Sailwave does allow you to manually change handicaps afer each race, but it’s a results system, not a handicapping system.

Jon Eskdale wrote an excellent extension to Sailwave that does a progressive handicap calculation. It recalculates the handicap based on previous results and loads the new handicap into sailwave. However, as we figured in a recent big regatta, there is still a significant amount of manual adjustment that a handicapper does based on outlier type cases (which I think is similar in golf - there is a recalculation guideline, but the handicapping committee reserve the right to fiddle it as they see fit). Sail100 also does progressive handicap, but same disclaimer applies.

Start with the Jon Eskdale code, and work from there.

Ian.
