Dear brains trust could someone please tell me What do they mean?
After scoring a race our sixth and last placed competitor had brackets around the number six

That normally indicates that the result of the race in question was discarded. There is an option to not show the discards.
Peter
Thanks for that, but why would they be discarded. The software made that decision not me, in some of our other series it was second or third placed competitors
Can you post the Sailwave file?
Sure, I’ll upload a couple of examples
Winter Series 2025.blw (29.0 KB)
Reg Roberts Twilight Series 24-25.blw (26.8 KB)
Thanks for having a look Peter
Your discard profile is 0,0,1,2 which means that there is one discard after three races are completed and two discard after four or more races are completed.
In the above example five races are sailed which means two discards. Boat L13 discards a 2nd and 3rd finish.
If you change the discard profile to 0 no races will be discarded as shown below:
Aah! I understand the terminology now, thank you Peter
Can the number of discards be adjusted to say one or none?
The discard profile option is very flexible. Enter 0 for no discards or 1 for one discard. You can also enter an expression:
The little cog wheel allows you to test your profile.
I would never use it but the below discard profile would be
0,0,0,0,0,0,2,2,2,2,4,4,4,4,4
1-6 races no discard
7-10 races 2 discards
11 or more races 4 discards
What would be a normal discard pattern for a six race series Peter? The 0,0,1,2 we have automatically inherited? I was thinking maybe something like 0,0,0,0,1,2 or 0,0,0,0,0,1 was more how our club might have operated in the past, but I’m not sure.
Pat, the ILCA class uses 0,0,0,1 for a 12 race series.
For club racing 0,0,0,0,1 would probably be fine.
My club uses s/3 for our long series, which discards one third of the races completed.
Peter
Hi Pat,
Firstly welcome back to the Sailwave User Group forum.
The discard profile is usually written into the Notice of Race and/or Sailing Instructions. However, if there is no mention of a discard profile in the Notice of Race and/or the Sailing Instructions then Racing Rules of Sailing Appendix A A2.1 applies:
Each boat’s series score shall, subject to Rule 90.3(b), be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score. However, the notice of race or sailing instructions may make a different arrangement by providing, for example, that no score shall be excluded, that two or more scores will be excluded, or that a specified number of scores will be excluded if a specified number of races are completed. …
Kind regards,

Thanks Huw. That’s interesting info
