Bug in sailno wizard in 1.57

Hi Colin,
I've noticed a bug in the 1.57 sailno wizard.

When entering results, it keeps reverting to 'Place or retirement
code', even when 'Elapsed time or retirement code' has previously
been selected in that wizard session.

The only way round it seems to be to select 'Elapsed time or
retirement code' for every boat.

James

Hi James,

When entering results, it keeps reverting to 'Place or retirement
code', even when 'Elapsed time or retirement code' has previously
been selected in that wizard session.

It's not a bug (but see my PS below), it's new behaviour...

Prior to 1.57, if you wanted to use the sailno wizard to enter results
across 3 (say) starts, each recorded in a different way, say elapsed time,
place and start/finish time, you had to create 3 fleets and remember to
enter at least one result in every race per fleet before using the wizard so
it would catch on.

You don't have to do that now. You create start records for each race
(EDit+Race) specifying how your results are going to be recorded. In the
above example you would create 3 start records.

Then when you run the sailno wizard you can enter sailnos for any of the
starts in any order and sailwave will track whats' happening and be able to
prompt you with the result type expected as per the start specification.

You don't have to define fleets anymore, just start records.

Other added benefits are that things like wind direction, course, race
length, wind strength etc are all recorded in start records now, allowing
much more flexibility (but only in the latest 1.58 beta linked to in a
previous post - which is much better WRT starts).

With the addition of score by any field, not just fleet, (also in the latest
1.58 beta), sailwave now has the overall' spahe' that I have always
intended. That is separating how the boats sailed, from how to score the
boats, because users want to score in lots of weird and wonderful ways, but
the boats only sail in one way.

Scoring rules have replaced fleets, in that you can now create scoring rules
to say things like "when scoring by club and the club=X, use this discard
system and this rating system".

By 'start' I do not mecessarilt mean a separate 'physical' start on the
water, all 3 groups of boats in the above example may have started together,
but there are 3 'logical'/'conceptual' starts because you are recording
places for one group, elapsed times for another and start/finish times for
the third.

I know it's a big change but it really is much better/consistent/flexible
now. It also means I can start to document it for real because the 'shape'
is there.

Please note that if out 3 groups of boats were all to be recorded as
start/finish times or elapsed times, you could ignore creatingh starts and
just set the fall-back finish type in Edit+ScoringSystem.

The starts exists soley to:-
drive the sailno wizard and edit+result
provide wind indexes and race distances when scoring.

That's it; as a side-effect they accurately document how the boats sailed.

I'll be extending publishing to include starts.

Regards,
Colin J

PS: unless you have already created starts and it's still doing it - then
it's a bug...

I forgot to say - the other thing that is much easier now is that previously
you had to 'put' entries in fleets, now you define who is in what start by
an expression, so when you add competitors to the series that match a start
expression, they are automatically in that start.

Hi Colin,
Thanks - that explains it all very nicely. It certainly is more

Hi Colin

I have just downloaded V1.58 to play with because our new sailing season opens tomorrow Saturday 18th and I wanted to be uptodate.

The query I have is, where do you find (Edit + Race) it does not show in the Edit drop down window.! We still have (Edit + Fleets). It didn't show in V1.57 either.

Would this be because I have not uninstalled the previous version before opening the new version?

We have 9 starts every Saturday and in the past have referred to the 9 Divisions in Sailwave as fleets which range from keelboats to optimists. I would like to start the new season as we intend to carry on and therefore would like to sort this out ASAP.

I would appreciated any help and comments

Kind regards

Hi Wayne,

I have just uploaded a batter 1,58 beta. I strongly recommend that you use
this rather than any other. It's now available from the download page of
the web site or this link:-

http://www.sailwave.com/binary/sw158sept16.exe

There are 3 routes into edit+race:-

1. right-click on a race column header and select 'edit race'.

2. right-click on any result cell in the race you want to edit and select
'edit race'.

3. left-click on any result cell in the race you want to edit and then use
the edit menu. Note that the 'edit race' option of the edit menu is
disabled **unless you have selected a result cell ** because Sailwave does
not know which race you want to edit otherwise.

Colin,

Just tried to publish some results form the latest Sailwave 158 beta dated
16th Sept, download and installed just before testing.

Good enhancements but with some problems for you to consider

I have a found what appear to be some backward steps in publishing
flexibility. I might be that I have not found the correct options yet

1) When publishing series results one used to be able to select the fleet
one wanted to publish, but now you get all if you have selected to publish
the results by fleet. I suspect the same will be true by other scoring
categories but have yet to try them.

2) When publishing results you also get all the competitors in the file
irrespective of if they have sailed a race or not, this did not used to be
the case.

3) When publishing individual race results the series information only
appears once at the start of the output and appears to be related to the
first fleet in my case, as I am scoring by the fleet column. Also it lists
the number of entries in that fleet as 0(zero).

Enhancement request
1) would it be possible to include as the discard and qualification profile
entries if they are set on the series & individual race results printouts.

I will send directly to you copies of the series & individual race file that
this release of Sailwave has produced from my current club series.

Hi Colin

Thanks for your help I have now sorted out Race Editing.

Just a thought, would it be practical to have Edit Race in the same drop
down box as Edit Series, Edit Scoring etc.

As I mentioned previously we have 9 starts every Saturday through our Summer
Season and each start has mixed classes for example Start 6 is multihull and
there are 2 Tornadoes, 2 A Class, 1 Hobie 18, anything from 6 to16 Hobie
16's and a couple of odd designs. With ver 1.58 we find that we have to
enter Div 1 in the Class column when entering competitors to make sure they
are in start 1. Div 2 for start 2 etc. Is it possible to have another slot
added to the drop down box when entering competitors to show what start they
are using as well as the "class" for identification and handicapping?

To help use with our record keeping we were wondering if it is possible to
print a report for each race showing each competitor, their sail no, TCF,
Finish time, corrected time, Rating needed to win and elapsed change to win?

The Rating Needed to win, appears to be not available after a race has been
saved, is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

Kind regards
Wayne Nolan

Hi Wayne,

Just a thought, would it be practical to have Edit Race in the same drop
down box as Edit Series, Edit Scoring etc.

When you right-click on a result cell, it's included because Sailwave knows
which race you're refrrring to. If you right-click on a competitor field
call, the race is ambigious.

As I mentioned previously we have 9 starts every Saturday through
our Summer
Season and each start has mixed classes for example Start 6 is
multihull and
there are 2 Tornadoes, 2 A Class, 1 Hobie 18, anything from 6 to16 Hobie
16's and a couple of odd designs. With ver 1.58 we find that we have to
enter Div 1 in the Class column when entering competitors to make
sure they
are in start 1. Div 2 for start 2 etc. Is it possible to have another slot
added to the drop down box when entering competitors to show what
start they
are using as well as the "class" for identification and handicapping?

There is no getting away form the fact that to include boats across classes
in the same start you either have to drag them into a start or select them a
list (as some programs to) or setup a common characteristic that the start
can be defined on. Sailwave uses the latter approach as it has many
benefits, especially if you change your mind about start structures. Just
think of the Fleet column as the start column, in fact you can rename it to
that if you want to. Soon there will be lots of other columns and it'll be
more obvious what I'm talking about. For example I envisage a "Hulls"
field/column so that starts can be defined for multihulls and monohuills
etc.

To help use with our record keeping we were wondering if it is possible to
print a report for each race showing each competitor, their sail no, TCF,
Finish time, corrected time, Rating needed to win and elapsed
change to win?
The Rating Needed to win, appears to be not available after a
race has been
saved, is this correct or am I doing something wrong?

The rating needed to win is calculated when you score a series, if you
unscore a series thereafter that information is lost and will be
recalculated when you score the series again. Saving the file should have
no effect on it unless there is a bug. To display the race tables when
prinint showing class, elapsed, corrected, Rwin and Ewin etc, you the
options available when you do publish+results. i.e. click the check box top
include race tables and tick the columns you want to see in them.

Regards,
Colin J
