I have entered a start time but can't work out how to input finish time as the time seems to be continually moving.
Anne,
A bit more explanation would be helpful.
But as a starter:
-
The start time should be in 6 digit format, and I prefer using
24-hr clock, HHMMSS. Various separators can be used but I
personnaly nearly always use a straight 6-digit entry as it
means one does not have to move ones had from a numeric pad if
you are using one. -
Finish time should be entered in same format as start time,
using same separators if used.
When you score the series Sailwave will automatically calculated the
elapsed time and the corrected time based on the selected
handicap/rating system being used and the associated handicap/rating
values.More information on the format of times, and dates, during data
entry can be found atKind regards,
Huw

My problem was that I entered the start time 12:45:00
but when I went to finish time it seemed to be a running time ie thinking that the race was going on and I was just inputting
finishers as they crossed the line

Well thanks for that. A 'conversion utility sounds like it would be a jolly useful thing if I had the remotest idea how to use it. I really must scan all thirteen thousand posts to see if there are any other jewels I have missed. And there are other things - when you put the date of the race in using ‘edit race’ the help pop up says the date can be in any format but the PYS upload will only work if it’s in DD/MM/YY (with slashes). Still, not many more races to upload this season. I wonder if MY handicap will improve!

Does "improve" mean that your handicap gets faster, meaning that you
sailed better, or mean that your handicap gets slower, meaning that you
didn't do well but that you will get a benefit against other boats in
the future? Curious here.

Subject: Re: [sailwave] Calculating elapsed timesAnne,
A bit more explanation would be helpful.
But as a starter:
a.. The start time should be in 6 digit format, and I prefer using 24-hr clock, HHMMSS. Various separators can be used but I personnaly nearly always use a straight 6-digit entry as it means one does not have to move ones had from a numeric pad if you are using one.
b.. Finish time should be entered in same format as start time, using same separators if used. When you score the series Sailwave will automatically calculated the elapsed time and the corrected time based on the selected handicap/rating system being used and the associated handicap/rating values.
More information on the format of times, and dates, during data entry can be found at
a.. http://www.sailwave.com/finish-time-entry-with-sail-no-wizard
b.. http://www.sailwave.com/start-time
c.. http://www.sailwave.com/elapsed-time-extensionsKind regards,

I have entered a start time but can't work out how to input finish time as the time seems to be continually moving.

Ouch! How much do you pay for Sailwave, George?
IME if you run the most recent version (hint) then a lot of earlier issues with PYS file uploads (from the PY website) have gone away.

Sailwave is international in scope. The date can be in any format. If you’re in the UK and want to upload to PYS then simply use a format that PYS wants. I don’t see why that’s a problem with Sailwave…

When the scheme came out I tried to get them to accept a date spec that the user could fill in - i.e. my dates are in this format - e.g. “d/m/y” and in fact I think I may still send a spec in defiance but it fell on deaf ears. It would be “the tail wagging the dog”.

Ok, I may have been a bit short for which I apologise. SW is indeed free and is a jolly Good Thing (read 1066 and All That for the definition of a Good Thing). My point, which I may not have elaborated on clearly enough, is that its interface with the RYA PYS website is not always seamless. Those of us who are not deeply embedded in the ranks of those who deal with results and handicaps and things tend to assume that those who run the PYS website and those who run sailwave are the same people, or at least close associates. I accept that the two organisations may be more separated than I had previously thought. Certainly I will use an updated version once I am certain it will not render my archive unusable, now that I have finally managed to force my 2010 results into the system. Disappointingly, my handicap has remained exactly the same!
Regards and gratitude,
George Morris

Hi George,
I don’t know what version you currently have but the current version will work fine with anything produced with a version release in at least the last 3 yrs. As with all data files it is always good practice to make backup copies so then you will have no fear of loosing anything. The conversion utility to convert “.” to “:” in the times couldn’t be easier to user.
Just give it the file name and it will convert them in a fraction of a second. If there is something that is causing a difficulty just let us know and we will see if we can improve it.
