We had an interesting error in the published results for this week’s club race.
The sequence of events went like this:
The original finish time entered into Sailwave contained an error for one of the competitors. The finish time of ‘20:30:57’ was changed to ‘20:50:57’. (I could not distinguish the two in the dim cabin light… that’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it)
The error was caught and when the scoring team reviewed the finish times & boat finish order. Unfortunately this was done after the race was already ‘scored’ the race was not re-scored prior to publishing. This resulted in a updated finish and elapsed time, but the ‘corrected time’ was not yet re-calculated.
We then moved venues… from the committee boat to the clubhouse… (i.e. interrupted the process of scoring the race) and…
The results were published in this state, creating the problems encountered, namely:
a) The series results had the 'finish times'displayed rather than the 'scored points'.
b) The 'scored points' for the competitor that had the updated finish time was incorrect.
Our new ‘golden rule’ for publishing is:
"Always 'score' (or re-score) the series immediately prior to publishing the results"
Thinking about the matter in the light of day, I’d think that the program could remove the corrected time and scored points if the finish time is altered. A boat without a corrected time or scored points would be an easier thing to notice in reviewing the published results than a wrong ‘corrected time’. This would trigger the scoring team to ‘re-score’ the series prior to publishing.
Thoughts?
