Captions for race tables - can edit???

Is it possible to edit the captions for the tables displaying the results of individual races?
I don’t think anyone really cares about the “start number” or “finishes” info. I do want to show the start time and course length, however.
I know that I could set to nodisplay in my style and thereby hide the captions entirely (at least I think I can do that). But, as noted above, there is some of the caption info that I like and do want to display.

PS - I like 95%+ of the scoring stuff in Sailwave. I am not so happy with the HTML output, which I would like to customize more.

To change captions, you can use a 'locale" i.e. a language file, as if it was a translation.

See on http://sailwave.com/help/HTML/translating_the_user_interface.htm for explanations

On http://www.sailwave.com/index.php?page=resources, download the original eng.txt version.

This is a template: open with WordPad, search for the exact caption you want to change and edit. Then save as … “MyLocale.txt”

Note : this caption, or part of it, may be found at several places…

Help!
I guess I’m dense because I went through eng.txt and couldn’t figure out how to do this. Perhaps you might give me a little help.
When I print my race results the caption above the HTML table for my first class reads:
Start:Start 1, Finishes:Finish time, Time:11:00, Distance:23.0 nmI don’t want to display the first two items (Start or Finishes) and would like the third item to read “Start Time” instead of “Time.” In other words, I would like the caption for the HTML table to read:
Start Time:11:00, Distance:23.0 nm

It isn’t obvious to me what I should be changing in the locale file.

Save eng.txt as MyLocale.txt in any location on your computer. Sadly, with Vista, if you are trying to save it in a convenient location, like C:\Sailwave\Languages…, access is blocked by the system and I’m afraid automatic update when a new version is published could lead to problems. So best create a \My Documents\Sailwave\Languages… and save the file in this folder.

Open MyLocale.txt with WordPad and edit.

Easy example, the reference file Eng.txt is in UK English, and youcan find “organisation”, “organise”, “organied”, “organising”…

If you prefer US English, best use “z” instead of “s”.

So File>Replace “organis” by “organiz” and [find next]. Replace only occurrences in the second line of each block.

Save and quit WordPad.

Open Sailwave and select Setup > Global Options > … browse to the folder you created and select MyLocale.txt.

When you are working with Sailwave, captions will always show “organiz…” instead of “organiz…”

Phil,

I’m sure Art understands the `find’ procedure.

However he (and I tried too) couldn’t find the caption he wants to change in the eng.txt file. I’m not too sure if this type of change can be done by means of locales.

A more inconveniant solution would be to run the html output thru’ a html editor to make the required changes there. But this would have to be done each time you publish.

What I found is that my Locales (in preparation, French and Dutch), based on the template eng.txt (as published presently!) are not working properly as some 250 captions were obsolete and almost as many were new.

So after running Sailwave with an obsolete Locale, you receive a message stating that the file was changed and you have to find these and change again…

Worse, if you opened Sailwave to check the result of your work, and further edited the file without closing the file, the file you were updating is lost and replaced by the version used by Sailwave.

On the contrary, if you are working on a temporary version then changes made by Sailwave get lost.

So best

  • Run once with unedited Locale to have an update of the file made by Sailwave
  • Edit your Locale on a temporary version (like fra_tmp.txt), then when you are testing, save a copy and use this one as Locale.

Malcolm,
Thanks. It seems that the “locale” file only allows one to change the text that is displayed on-screen in the various menus. I couldn’t see a way to change the HTML output, which is what I wanted to do (I was looking to change the text for race and series tables). If I could find a way to automatically run a macro after my HTML file is “published” but before it is sent to the internet via ftp then that would probably be an acceptable kludge. I am doing this as a favor for a local club (not my own) after I convinced them to use a new scoring system that is inconsistent with their default scoring program (done in DOS by one of their members 15 years ago).

The scoring system is a modified version of the Point Percentage system. For each race, each boat gets a score based on her finishing position and the number of boats she beats. Sailwave allows us to write our somewhat complicated formula as an equation and makes implementing the scoring system a snap. I’m now trying to get the HTML outlook to look decent but that seems to be a bit frustrating as I don’t seem to have as many options with that as I have with the actual scoring.

Art

PS - Good to know you are still around. I remember when we were all posting daily in rec.boats.racing some 15-20 years ago!
