Change Class on a Per Race Basis??

All,

I have 2 questions for the group:

1. Does anyone have situations where the Class/handicap of a
particular boat changes on a per race basis?

Our club allows a boat to declare spinnaker use on a per race basis,
which changes their PHRF rating (i.e. Catalina 22 WK <=> Catalina 22
WK NO-SPIN or Capri 22 WK <=> Capri 22 WK NO-SPIN).

Currently our ratings in Sailwave are entered on a boat type basis.
So, Catalina 22 WK has a single rating in Sailwave, and when scoring
we have to remember whether it is the base rating or NO-SPIN rating.
Then we have to remember the PHRF rating to change it to for that
race. Some of our boats always race one way or the other, while other
boats change on a per race basis.

I guess if we set them all to base and then had a lookup sheet for the
corresponding NO-SPIN rating that would be pretty simple.

But I was hoping that we could do it all within Sailwave (i.e. no
lookup sheet). Also, it would nice if the results could display the
Class (i.e. base or NO-SPIN) on a per race basis, so that people would
not have to interpret the PHRF rating to determine if the results have
been recorded and adjusted correctly.

2. Am I missing something here or does this seem like a reasonable
enhancement request?

I would like to create a new Sailwave ratings file where each class
has a separate entry for base and NO-SPIN, like I saw in the Sailwave
help file:

System Class DefaultValue
PHRFTOT Capri 22 (WK) 215
PHRFTOT Capri 22 (WK) (NO-SPIN) 227

Then I want to be able to "Edit result" to change the Class for a boat
on a per race basis. However, Sailwave will only let me change the
numeric rating on a per race basis.

As a workaround, I created a new Sailwave ratings file using the
WindValues to store the NO-SPIN PHRF rating -- so at least both PHRF
ratings will be visible on the same screen when doing "Edit result".
NOTE: We don't actually use Wind Index.

System Class DefaultValue WindValues
PHRFTOT Capri 22 (WK) 215 227,
PHRFTOT Capri 22 (SK) 218 230,

This seems to mostly accomplish the goal, though not a pretty as I
would like.

If nobody else has this problem, then we'll deal with it ourselves and
thanks for reading.

Otherwise, I'm open to other ideas.

Thanks,

Rob

Wow! I'm impressed with your effort on Sailwave.

My initial reaction to using the wind index for Spin/No spin is negative. I
think at some point it would be good to start using that feature of sailwave
- if we ever do we'll have to hit the reset button.

Personally I've always thougth the way PHRF overrides were set up was
straight forward. I always set up the Base PHRF in sailwave to reflect the
PHRF a particular boat sailed to a mojority of the time. That way I wasn't
stuck with the handbook definition of what base PHRF was for the value I
needed to use when scoring. There could be an argument here against
consictency I suppose, however, it seems to me we need to keep in mind what
we're trying to accomplish: quick and accurate scoring

I think it would be a good idea to get BBYRA Sailwave users together to
agree on procedure fore BBYRA keeping in mind where the author of sailwave
is heading.

Rob, I'm in no way critical of your effort. I just think we should think it
over before we use wind indexes for spin adjustment.
