I use
sailwave since 2007 without any major problem until now. But recently I faced
the following problem: In 2 events with corrected time scoring system, I had to
change the class of the boats during the event or allocate some of them in a
new class. In both events the program did not maintained the original rating of
the boats but changed it. The new rating was the rating of the first boat allocated
in the new class so all the boats in the class had the same rating, which led
to wrong results. Trying to understand the reason for this, I found that this happened
when I used the fields “Class” or “Fleet” but not the field “Division”. I could not also find what caused the
problem.
I would
appreciate if somebody could explain to me if I did something wrong so I may
avoid that in the future or if there is a bug in the program.
Could you check that the box ringed in red in the following image
is not checked?
If you care to send me a copy of your Sailwave file before
changes and explain each of the changes so I can go through them
I will have a look and see if I can determine the problem you have
experienced.
Kind regards,
Huw

The event
was a Classic and Traditional boats regatta in Greece.
There were 8 fleets in
total. In one of them (TOB 1) the OC decided to have a medal race for the 6
first boats after 6 races and a final race for the others.
In order to
set the Medal Race I created two new classes for the TOB 1 Fleet: Medal for the
boats assigned to the medal race and NM for the others. This way I could have only
one class sailing in each race (Medal and final). Perhaps this is not the
simplest way to set a medal race but I am not very experienced in that.
When I
assigned the boats to these 2 new classes, Sailwave changed the ratings of the
boats so that all the boats in each class had the same rating which was the rating
of the boat that was first assigned to that class.
In the
attached file scyr2016_tob1_3_01072016.blw you will find the ratings as they
were changed after I assigned the boats to the new classes.
In the
attached file scyr2016_tob1_4_04072016.blw I have restored the correct ratings
after I found the problem.
I will look at this in the morning. I am looking at another
request for help at the moment.

The reason the ratings changed to the same value for the
medallists is that you have used the Class column/field to tag
them. Sailwave has a field/column labelled by default ‘Medallist’
that should be used for this. This field is automatically updated
as you score the series but needs a score series before the medal
race is run and of course the medal race configuration set-up
under Series scoring.
If you had chosen a different column to the 'Class' column [for
example Division] to store the medallist / non-medallist
information I do not think the rating would have changed for the
medallists.
I have made the slight change in the attached file to show the

green and blue + whiteThank you
Huw,
Your
comments helped me understand better how to set a medal race and solve some
minor problems I had with it. But my problem was not solved.
I had the
same problem a couple of months ago in another event. It was a fleet race event
without medal race. The boats were divided in four groups / divisions (red,
green, blue and white). The groups were sailing against each other combined
into two classes which were changing every other day (eg. 1st day
red + green and blue + white, 3rd day red + blue and green + white
etc.). In order to set this format of races I created 2 new classes every other
day (eg red + green and blue + white). When I tried to assign boats to these
new classes I had the same problem of changing the ratings. You may find a blw
file of this event attached to this message.
My question
is why sailwave changed the ratings of the boats when they were assigned to a
new class and how may I avoid it in the future?
Pleased my previous email has proved helpful to your
understanding.
The way you have tried to rotate different colour groups is
unfortunately wrong. The way you have tried to do it has the same
problem we sorted out in my previous email. In this case the
solution is different though.
I have modified teh file you sent so that you can take a look at
what I have done.A boat is allocated to a colour group it stays in
that colour group for all races. The trick is combine which boats
race against each other in a race, so look at how I have done this
in race information for each race.
Note - for 4 colour groups there need to be multiples of 3 races
sailed for all competitors to have sailed against each other. For
example with colour groups Red, Green, White & Blue:
R1 Start 1 Red & Green sail together
R1 Start 2 White & Blue sail together
R2 Start 1 Red & White sail together
R2 Start 2 Green & Blue sail together
R3 Start 1 Red & Blue sail together
R3 Start 2 Green & White sail together
I gently suggest that you download Mark Townsend's Sailwave User
