Changes to handicaps

Hi all

we are running a 14 race series (Friday Nights) and want to amend a few boat’s handicaps from race 4 onwards without re-scoring the previous races.

Any ideas on how to do this?

Hi Vic,

Yes it is possible to do what you want.

  For the boats you want a different rating from R4 onwards, double

click the union of a boat in question and the race column and the
Edit race” window will pop-up. In this window select the "Rating "
tab and at the bottom enter the new rating in the box alongside "* Race
rating* " and also check the box underneath in front of the
words “Use until the next race rating is specified”.

  Note - in the published results the default rating will be

listed. So you might want to add in the Notes field for the
competitor that the rating was changed from R4 and to what and
publish the Notes field when you publish the results. I used to do
this when Laser sailors switched between full-rig and radial-rig
depending on wind strength.

I’m in a similar situation in, my club allows sailors to switch classes between races, so often each competitor can be in a different class in each race. I’m trying to work out how I can handle this, and also have some results to send to the RYA through the plugin. Is it possible to do this in a logical way?

Josh,

I think you are correct in thinking that using one competitor to record results for different boats will make the data useless for the RYA pyonline system. I think they need each class/competitor combination to be separate.

We have developed a process for aggregating a whole season’s series results based on the helm name without altering the scores such as DNC/RAF etc. It might help you and allows you to keep the classes separate in the source Sailwave file. It could be run through each day after racing but probably better at the end of a series. It involves exporting scores into a spreadsheet and then using a semi automatic process in Excel based on the helmname to consolidate the scores, including original scores for DNC/RAF etc. and to calculate the final net score and ranking. It is relatively simple especially if you know a bit about Sailwave and Excel. [it uses the CONSOLIDATE command and the SUM, LARGE and RANK functions]

The process is reproduced below beneath my signature block (I could send the document to your directly if the formatting is lost below). If you are interested in exploring its’ functionality I can send the spreadsheet to your too.

Perhaps one of the Sailwave gurus will be able to tell us about a better way to do it?!

Aggregating results by helm using Sailwave’s Merge
Series and a “Consolidating” Excel sheet.

(1) Ensure that names for individual helms
are spelt identically for each boat that they sail.

(2) If only one series is involved move to
A.

(3) Merge Series files

Open a blank template for your normal series and save as e.g.

“Aggregate Merged – Overall 2015-11-08.blw”

(4) For each series merge in the relevant
Sailwave Series

Open the Merge dialogue on the File menu

(a) Browse and select file to be merged

(b) Select "Merge/match competitors
and append races/results

© Select only Helm and Sailnum to
identify competitors to be merged

(d) Merge

(5) Delete the one Ambiguous boat originating
from the template file – blank results

**(6) **DO NOT RESCORE

(7) Save e.g. “Aggregate Merged – Overall
2015.blw”

A. Export Merged Series to Windows
clipboard

(1) View; Hide discard formatting

(2) F6 - View “scored points (no
codes)”

(3) Export series to Windows clipboard

(a) Class; Helmname; Crewname; Race columns

(b) Field separator: Comma

© Include a column name line

(d) Export

(e) Close

B. Prepare data to remove multiple rows
per helm and check for any odd looking data.

(1) Open Excel

(2) Paste from the clipboard onto a new
sheet

(a) Data; Text to columns

(b) Delimited; Next

© Comma; Finish

(d) Optionally delete columns for blank races

(3) Save as CSV file – just in case.

e.g. “Aggregate

C. Process prepared data to calculate
final results

(1) Open Excel file “Calculate Rank from overall
merged CSV.xlsx”

(2) Open tab DATA

(3) Clear content of all cells on
this tab

(4) Return to “Aggregate Merged –
2015 FINAL.csv”

(5) Select all cells and copy to clipboard

(6) Return to “Calculate Rank from
overall merged CSV.xlsx”

(7) Click cell A1 on tab DATA and paste
from the clipboard

(8) In row 1 set race names to R1,
R2, R3, etc…

(9) Move to tab CONSOLIDATED

(10) Clear content of all cells on
this tab and click cell A1

(11) To consolidate results by Helm
name

(a) Select Data on the menu bar, then
Consolidate

(b) Set Function: to Min

(d) Tick “Top Row” and “Left Column”

(e) Click OK to consolidate the data onto
the CONSOLIDATED tab

(12) Move to tab RESULT which sets up the DNC
score for blank cells and calculates the Total, Nett and Rank columns

(13) All cells except A1:C1 contain formulae

(14) Check that the SUM function in B2
covers all race columns.

(15) To calculate discard score

(a) Check that the LARGE function in C2
covers all race columns and depending on how discards are to be handled, has
the right set of numbers within the { } to sum the highest scores forming the
discarded portion of scores; e.g. 41
races needs to sum the highest 21 results ; e.g. to sum the highest scores
forming 50% of scores rounded up to a whole number:

C2=B2-SUM(LARGE(E2:AS2,{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21}))

(16) Replicate cells A2, B2 and C2 down the
column to the last boat

(17) Check that the formulae in columns E
and onwards cover the full range of the data columns and rows from tab CONSOLIDATED

(18) Save the Excel sheet to a suitably
named file

(19) Save the RESULT tab as a final csv file

e.g. Aggregate Merged – 2015 FINAL.csv

D. Use Sailwave to publish the final
aggregated result

(1) Import the final csv file into Sailwave

**(2) **DO NOT RESCORE

(3) Save as Aggregate Merged – 2015 FINAL.blw

(4) Publish as required
