Like many clubs, we’ve been using the RYAs PYS system to send returns. We also get a report that indicates the actual (recommended) PYs for our water for the classes we sail. So, I now need to change the PYs on several classes from the standard RYA numbers.
How do I do that? The standard RYA data was previously downloaded and appears to be ‘uneditable’
I’ve tried copying the new numbers from the PYS site onto an excel page and tried to find a way to make it a .csv file - but unsuccessfully. But even if I crack that, what will make the PY change from the existing value assigned to each competitor / boat?
For Information, I set up new series by using a previous as template - then deleting all the races (and hence results - leaving all the competitors with their boats and the ‘Old’ RYA PYs.
Do I have to go through all 200+ competitor changing all their PYs?

It is easy to create a CSV file from within Excel, when you know how
The ratings files available for download from the Sailwave website
are all able to be edited using a spreadsheet program (Microsoft
Excel, LibreOffice Calc for example and I use both both to do so).
I am not sure what version of Excel you are using but in 2007
edition select File Save As, then Other Formats and in the list of
file types drop down list find “CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)” and
then click on Save. You can also edit the CSV file using a text
editor like Notepad, but don’t use Worodpad or Word , as the
CSV file is just an ordinary text file.
On the Rating system tab of Scoring system almost at the bottom is a
check box ‘Auto set competitor ratings’ check this box and when you
score the first race the ratings should be updated. You may want to
take this off after the first race so that the handicaps do not then
change and the results do not change if you update the ratings.
Also note that you need to set the path to the ratings file using
the Set Up | Global options and the Folders tab.
You can also for a competitor change the rating to use for a race or
from t hat race on by right clicking on the race result cell and
selecting Edit Result then selecting the Rating tab and setting the
rating for the race in the bottom box. If you want to use the rating
for this race and subsequent races use the check box below.

Did all as informed above and as soon as I amended one PN and went to check if it had worked, I’d lost all ratings, and the drop down had no classes in it at all. Tried every combination possible ( and believe me on this) - I did it several times with boxes ticked , unticked , routes to files in routes not in, restart sailwave , don’t restart sailwave - same with PC and all done over and over.
still no ratings.
Tried deleting all PN.csv files- still no ratings
Tried deleting ALL.csv files - still no ratings
Tried deleting sailwave and re-installing - and downloading ryapn.csv - Hallelujah! ratings and drop down works. BUT as soon as I amend any rating and check - all dissapear again - so repeated above and got very frustrated. Took to ‘club expert’ same process - same frustrations. Took to Club Super expert - works on banks security systems and other stuff - he gave it to one of his team who tells us it works - but ONLY if amends are done in excel! (I was using open office / Libre as default).
iThis seems a major bug, or is it just some weird setting on our laptop (windows 7)?
Should have said that when I deleted a .csv rating file I always downloaded it again - so there was alway one there when I looked.
(Also tried having it in sme place as sailwave itself (Programmes) , same place as sailwave data, Moving it all to downloads, - really every poss combination - and more than once to be certain!

I am sorry to hear that you are having such problems. You should be
able to use LibreOffice/OpenOffice instead of Excel, I regularly use
LibreOffice for editing files for Sailwave.
When you say 'amend one PN' I assume you are doing this using a
spreadsheet (Excel/LibreOffice/OpenOffice) or a simple text editor
like Notepad - CSV files are simple text files. I also assume that
you save from the amended file in CSV file format.
There was a previous posting to the SUG about problems with CSV
files having hidden characters that do not show in a spreadsheet or
in Notepad and it caused several people a lot of effort but it was
finally tracked down.

To clarify (and amplify?) Jon's comment:
If you copy and PASTE some text into Excel you CAN create non-breaking
spaces if it was in the original you copied from. If you copy and PASTE
SPECIAL>AS TEXT then any non-breaking spaces are converted to normal
spaces. It depends on how you paste, not what you paste.
As Jon says, the problem characters were undoubtedly in the original
source from which the CSV was generated (99% certainty).

Hi Wayne,
Been looking into this in more detail the A0 is used as the code for a non
blanking space ( ) typically used with html so it really seems to
depend on the original source of the data. I could not make Excel put it
into a .csv file no matter what method I tried without having it in the
source.*
Sorry for these questions but it will be helpful to understand the
problem you are having and hopefully solve it for you. How are you
modifying the rating for a class? Are you doing a cut & paste
from some source or manually typing it in?

In follow-up to Jon's post, there is another reason to put the
ratings files in the location he suggested. When you re-install
Sailwave it effectively removes the Sailwave folder and sub-folders,
so if you had a ratings sub-folder under the Sailwave install folder
it will have been wiped out. The same goes if you had anything in
the Styles and/or Templates sub-folders under the Sailwave install
folder.
Kind regards,

Hi,
If you go to Setup - Global Options - Folders, you

I would suggest
usingC:\Users\Public\Documents\Sailwave\Ratings\ on
Windows 7/8 as they will then be available to all users
of the laptop.

If it works with the Excel produced csv (and I know it also works with a Notepad produced csv) then it is not a Sailwave bug. If it doesn’t work with an Open/Libre Office file then there is either something wrong with the format that Open office is saving it in or you have selected the wrong format to save it in. If you would like to send me a file from Open Office I’ll tell you why it doesn’t work. Although I think Huw has just posted some ideas.
