Chipstead SC adoption of CHIPS High Point Scoring

For those of you who may be interested:
After a full season's trial of CHIPS High Point Scoring, Chipstead SC
has now taken the decision to adopt this scoring method for the
foreseeable future.
Details of the trial are given on the Chipstead website
chipsteadsc.org.uk including a comparison with conventional Low Points
Scoring for a large number of dinghy series results.
As a consequence of lessons learnt during the trial the formula has
been optimised to make the curves "flatter" than in the original
version. Also a provision has been added to handle heavy weather when
there is a tendancy for a smaller turn-out.
Full details of the scoring method have been added to the Files area,
together with a spreadsheet which enables CHIPS scores to be calculated
easily.

Geoff,

Thanks for posting your information I look forward to reading it.

Just an observation, in your message below you mention a provision to handle 'heavy weather, would this work for light weather as well? We also get lower turnouts in light wind conditions!

Kind regards,

Huw

Yes it
would work equally well for light weather since all it does is include, in
effect, 2 “phantom boats” in the number of starters. We have prescribed a definitive way of determining whether
the “heavy weather rule” should apply based upon wind gust measurements (at
least 2 readings in excess of 20 knots in a specific 5 minute period before the
race start).

To be fair
one needs an unarguable prescription for applying the rule.

It could
of course be set to any number of phantom boats, not necessarily 2.

We only
apply it to heavy weather because there was a feeling in the club that only the
better sailors go out in heavy weather and they should not be “penalised” by a
low turn-out.

Best
regards,

Geoff

Geoff,

Thanks for your prompt reply. FYI - I have sent the link to the information on CHIPS to my Sailing Committee members for their comments with my intention of using it at least alongside alternatives to show the members the effects. I am also considering using the Personal Handicap options in Sailwave.

Thanks again.

Kind regards

Hi Geoff,

I’ve had a few enquiries about this sort of scoring - I’ll burn it into Sailwave as CHIPS and add a link in the help file to your documentation on it.
