College regatta scoring

Hi all, I am trying to set up scoring for a college Regatta. Here is the issue... Each University for example will send two teams, each team consists of four sailors, call them crew A and crew B. Crew A will sail the first two races, then switch with Crew B to sail the next two races. However, the score counts together for the team. Added to this, is boat rotation. They would also like to be able to know the score for the individual groups / crew of sailors.
I realize I could set it up just using the sail number for each team but it gets a little more complicated with the rotation and needing to know a result for each team.
Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.

Hi,

This will not quite answer your questions. But if you are scoring

an event in the USA under the ICSA (Intercollegiate Sailing
Association) they have their own scoring app that is web based and
handles that stuff. It is accessible through the host of each
event. They score on the water.

Hi,

I have been giving some thought to your problem.

If the ICSA system meets you requirements then use it.

When I am faced with a different requirement I do some dummy runs with made up placings to test I am getting the system working.

To compare universities I would enter the different universities as clubs, (maybe even rename the column as university), enter the results and score competitors as 1 group, then publish using the team prize table, selecting Club and the appropriate setting for each option.

I would expect you will need to include all competitors in the starts then manage the DNC’s as half the competitors will have a DNC for the first 2 races and the other half will have DNC for the other 2 races. Options could be to include the DNC scores, make DNC = 0, or have a discard profile for 4 races like 1,2,2,2.

To get the next level look at having identifiers in the fleet column such as university 1 Team A, university 2 Team B, etc, then publish using the team prize table using Fleet as the sort factor and adjusting the other parameters to match. You could score this as 1 group then sort competitors on fleet. If you score as fleets, I would expect each fleet would end up with the same total score.

With only 4 races and a limited number of competitors I would expect you will have lots of situations where there are multiple competitors with the same net points but different ranking on countback.

You mention rotating boats, as I have not been involved in a regatta where this has happened, I am unsure how to handle this. My first thoughts would be to allocate each competitor with a bow number, which could be attached to the boat and moved to the next boat when a change is made. Possibly adhesive numbers at least 8”(200mm) high. I would expect this to give easy accurate results entry.

I hope this provide food for thought.

Enjoy your sailing.
