Confused

I recently ran a regatta using the PY rating system (Portsmouth Yardstick)
for catamarans - Hobies Tigers, Hobie Foxes, Inter 20s, etc. I entered their
Portsmouth numbers per instructions. When the races were completed I entered
the elapsed time for each boat for each race. We had 7 races in two days.
The times ranged from 48:00 to 1:12:00 per race. When I had the program
score the event it came up with very strange corrected times.

Example:

Hobie Tiger Rating 63.5 Time 57.45 Corrected 15:09:27
According to the formula it should have been 90.94 minutes. Why does it show
15:09:27? Am I doing something wrong with the program?

Hi Steve,

According to the formula it should have been 90.94 minutes. Why
does it show
15:09:27? Am I doing something wrong with the program?

Did you use the laps field as well; i.e. was it an average lap time race?
this can cause that phenomenon. Other then that, send me the .blw file and
I'll have a look. What version of Sailwave are you using?

Regards,
Colin

Steve
for a PY of 63.5 sailwave produced exactly the correct answer i.e.
elapsed multiplied by 1000, all divided by PY.
Where on earth did you get a PY of 63.5 from.
In general PY's range between about 750 and 1700, for instance a Hobie 18 is
744.

Hi John,

Ah - I see - I suspect Steve meant to choose USSA PN and not RYA PN; the
USSA PN formula uses 100 as a multiplier, not 1000. Thanks for that John;
Steve should be OK now. Both systems are called Portsmouth unfortunately
but there are quite a few differences; another being that USSA PN has the
concept of wind-specific values and rating modifiers. It may be a good idea
to define a nominal rating for each system and a percentage range within
which the rating values usually fall, and warn if the user enters a value
outside of that range...?

Colin,

You are correct. I put in the wrong rating. I have corrected it and the
corrected time is now right but another strange thing happened. There were
nine boats in the race and when I had the program score the race the elapsed
time on 5 of the nine boats changed to a strange number. Instead of the
actual time it showed 0.041666667, 0.042314815, etc. The other 4 boats the
elapsed time stayed in minutes and seconds.

It did have all the corrected times right.

Steve

Did not use the lap field. These times entered were the total elapsed time
for the whole race.
