Copy from previous series (Handicap Roll Over)

I am trying to roll over the handicap from one series to another. This will crate a handicap that runs through the year as we compete more than one series (Spring, Summer, Winter)…

Some forum suggest this can be done via the Navigate to the “Edit” menu, and then select either “Import Results” or “Copy from Previous Series”. The exact wording may vary slightly depending on your Sailwave version.

I am on Version 2.38.2-1 and i don’t see these options in either “file or edit”?

could you help please?

Cheers Ant

Ant,

Firstly welcome to the Sailwave User Group forum.

The quick and easy way if many of the competitors will remain the same, is to make a copy of the latest series after it finishes and rename for the next series. Once this done delete all races but the last one and now you are set for the new series, using the latest rating calculated. Add more races as required in the new series.

I hope that helps and I have not missed something.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Anthony,

To do what you want is actually quite easy.

With a progressive handicap you always have one extra race in Sailwave than you have raced and this race contains the handicap for the next race.

So - delete all the races except this extra race, for example if you have 8 races that have results, race 9 will contain the ratings for the next race so delete all 8 races so that R9 becomes R1

Then you have all the ratings carried forward ready for your next series

Hope that helps

Jon

I am confused

Series 1 (lets call it Brass) has 4 races (B1, B2, B3 and B4)

I copy Series 1 and all the races into a new series (lets call it Spring). I delete B1, B2 and B3 keeping B4…

I then add in the New Races for Spring (S1, S2, S3, S4) so my Race looks like B4, S1, S2, S3, S4) do i then delete B4?

Cheers Ant

Hi Ant,

Firstly with any progressive rating/handicap system like RYA NHC, there has to be one more race in the series than races that will actually be sailed. This is so there is a race for Sailwave to put the next race rating/handicap. So, Series 1 (Bronze) should have 5 races if there are 4 actual races (B1, B2, B3, B4) in the series. R5 (B5) is the race which holds the rating that you want for the start of the new series.

Save Series 1 (Brass) as a new file , say Series 2 (Bronze). Now delete all races except the last race which will have no results as it is the ‘holding’ race for the next race rating. the race you have remaining will now be called R1 by default. Now add the additional races as required including the plus 1 for holding the rating after the last race of the new series is scored.

You can see the rating(s) associated with each race by selecting from the drop down list of views (after scoring series the box will show ‘Scored points’) and select ‘Ratings’.

Hi Ant,

I have done a couple of screen grabs which I hope will assist your understanding.

The first is how a screen will look after scoring a series, this is a series being scored using RYA NHC, with no results in R7. There are only 6 races sailed in the series.

The next screen grab shows the rating view, which is selected from the drop down list highlighted and labelled 1.

R1, highlighted and labelled 2, has no rating value shown as this race uses the default rating shown in the rating column.

R7, highlighted and labelled 3, shows the rating that would be used for R7 if it was run. But if it was run there would then have to be another race, R8, added.

So as previously explained, to carry over the rating in R7 to be the rating for the first race of a new series; save this file with a new name, delete races R1 to R6 and save the file - R7 will become R1 unless you had renamed it to something else) after the deletion of R1 to R6. Now add extra races remembering to add one extra to hold the rating after the last actual race in the series has been scored.

Kind regards,
Huw

Thank you for the step-by-step guide and this is now clear to me… thank you for your help

cheers Ant

Hi Huw,
Can I use this method for Sailwave to work out personal handicaps over a season from the PY numbers or are only certain systems suitable for progressive handicapping?
With thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,

You can use RYA NHC rating system with RYA PY Numbers to work out a personal handicap over a season.

You may want to view the ratings used in each race and export to a spreadsheet to do some more advanced analysis and/or calculations The data shown on the screen is honoured when you use the File menu option ‘Export to Windows clipboard’, you can then paste the information into a spreadsheet for further analysis.

I hope that helps.
Kind regards,
Huw

Thank you. I’ll give that a go and let you know how I get on.

Hi Huw,
Sadly, I think that I am doing something wrong. I think my regatta setup looks the same as in your screen grabs but I am not getting any recalculated ratings

I would attach my blw file in the hope that you could spot my silly mistake but get the message that new users cannot attach files.
With thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard

I just checked your permissions and it says you were granted all necessary rights 6 hrs ago

Please let me know if you still can’t attach your blw file

Thanks

Jon

Logged out and logged back in and it seems to be working now. Thank you.

Hi Richard,

Yes there is problem with your configuration :frowning:

You have selected ‘Custom External’ (1), if you select ‘External Debug’ you will see something happen as long as you have Excel installed on the PC. Sailwave will use the default NHC spreadsheet it has been hard coded to use and I can’t remember which one it is, located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sailwave\Templates. To see the ratings used in each race after scoring the series, click the down arrow beside ‘Score Points’ on the toolbar and select 'Ratings.

The reason you are not getting anything happening when you have ‘Custom External’ selected, is you have not checked the box ‘External Link’ (2) and put the name of the Excel file to be used. This Excel file must be located in the default Templates folder, C:\Program Files (x86)\Sailwave\Templates.

I hope the information helps you but if not ask again.
Kind regards,
Huw

Thank you, that’s worked a treat.
