Cox Sprague Scroing System

Colin

Cox-Sprague:
Robert N Bavier Jr, Faster Sailing, 1956, p147-148;
F Gregg Bemis, Yacht Race Scoring, 1960, p26-28 (but his formula is wrong wrong wrong)
C Stanley Ogilvy, Win More Sailboat Races, 1976, p118-122

I've found later references to the use of C-S, but nothing describing it in any detail.

I have some notes of my own which are rather incomplete.

The references above are quite short enough to copied/scanned & sent if you wish.

Colin, et al: You will find that teh Cox-Sprague system is *VERY*
similar to teh Rinderle B system you have implimented. They have teh
same basis - weighing position in fleet against size of fleet and
assigning points appropriate.

Our regional yachting association has been using C-S for its
inter-club series since the 1940s. (see links below) There’s no sense
in discussing the merits of the system, because ‘momentum’ and
‘archaic tradition’ trump all arguments! However, I have conceived a
possible C-S work-around for SW…

Create a C-S ‘template’ regatta which has 19 different scoring
systems, one for each size fleet: 2,3,4,…,19,20+. When scoring the
regatta, you simply select the scoring system which corresponds to the
number of entrants. Each scoring system would be a custom high-point
system defined by a list of values. Here’s the trick: the list of
values must be the calculated ‘percent-of-perfection’ fractions for
each place and, to avoid accumulating a rounding error, the values
will need several (5 or more?) decimal places! (assuming SW can deal
with that) Finally, the Overall series points calculation must be set
to the Average of non-discarded scores to get a fractional result.

With a little tuning-up of the scoring codes, this appears to work -
if you’re willing to do the data setup! However, the rounding error
may still be a problem depending on how SW handles the calculations.

After further thought, the work-around I described is fine for a regatta
with a same number of starters in each race. However, if you're scoring
a series of races (or regattas, as in our case) with varying numbers of
starters, it will not work. Stick with the spreadsheet!
