CSV files

Dear Colin, for the first time I used the SW 1.87 import function to
import competitors from a CSV file, excel generated.
Unlukily the CSV format generated by excel 2003 Italian version (as by
save as ... command) does not conform the standard format, because the
separator is ";".
Is it possible for you to allow to choose the separator character use
in the CSV file, in order to avoid to edit it and to substitute
the ";" charachter with the "," one, or to add a function to import
fron an XML file?
Thanks, Roberto Armellin

Hi Roberto

I am surprised that Excel would save a spreadsheet in a different format simply because it is in a
different language.
Other users have come across your type of problem due to the way which they saved & then imported.

My procedure (using 'English' Excel 2000) is
FROM A SPREADSHEET
-follow menu of File\Save As
In the Save As window
-select CSV as the file type
-name your file

A message appears about supporting workbooks ... multiple types
-click on OK to save only the active sheet

A message appears about features not compatible with CSV
- click on Yes to keep this format

At this point your spreadsheet should now have been converted to a csv file.
When you close the file, you are asked if you want to save the file
(A Microsoft annoyance considering you have just saved it)
-Click on NO

WITHIN SAILWAVE
-follow menu of File\Import\Competitors From a CSV File
-use the browse button to find your CSV file
-the next window confirms that your CSV file has field names (titles in row 1)
-map the fields you want to pick up with Sailwave columns
-click on Finish in the next window

This should have imported your competitors - without any requirements to set the csv separators.
Let me know what is different in 2003 Italian version
If there is a difference between 2000 & 2003, I have a copy of English 2003 & will load it up

Regards
Ralph

Dear Ralph, do not be surprised.
I believe that this issue depends on the Italian numbers format, i.e. the
decimal separator is the comma "," instead the dot ".", and excel allow to
save numeral fields with decimal, i.e. with commas. Just to avoid confusion,
excel export with ";" separator.
Even, if you import a CSV standard file only one field per record is filled
in.

I have a question about what you can or cannot do after importing the file.

We have a Quickbase database of alll our Association members (~100). The import to SW now goes well after struggling a bit with the save stuff. Typically we only have about 30 competing at a time but not the same 30. Is there any easy way to select competitors from the imported file instead of not scoring non comprting members?

I am new to Sailwave and the user group so forgive me if this has already been covered

I see!

Have you tried the Format\Cells option in Excel where you can set your own custom format.
This would allow you to create a format for your spreadsheet which has the . instead of ,

After you have imported the file, more recent versions of SW have a much improved “Delete Competitors” window.

This lists all the competitors in your SW file so that you can click on the ones you don’t want & then delete them

(which is probably quicker than messing around with editing & saving csv files)

If you want to make the delete process even quicker, you could wait until race 1 has been scored (but not published) & the competitors not competing will all be together at the bottom of the listings

Alternatively, there is an Exclude column so that those competitors can be excluded from the results (I think)

Not sure if this suits your purpose as you will probably get quite a few pages of print out when publishing

Dear David, at moment I
don’t know any other scoring program than ZW http://www.zw-scoring.nl/ having the
feature you are asking for.

This feature was added to
ZW on request of Sailing Italian Federation, sharing to the Sailing Clubs its
members updated database. The purpose is to allow the annual fee payment checking
and to quickly import the
full record of selected names in the scoring program in case of race.

Attached a small sample file
to know the format of the members file.

Hi Ralph,

Alternatively, there is an Exclude column so that those competitors can be

excluded from the results (I think)
Not sure if this suits your purpose as you will probably get quite a few
pages of print out when publishing<<

If you're not viewing excluded competitors in the main view, they will not
be published either. From a scoring POV, excpuded competitors are treated
as if they did not exist. Many clubs always fully load their series and
then include/exclude as required.

Having an “include” option would savr some key strokes in our case but no big deal. Is there a quick way to undo the delete if you make a mistake.
