Colin,
All of our races are scored via a custom high point system:
1st = 100pts
2nd = 99 pts
3rd = 99 pts
I think we could then manipulate DNF/DNS/DNC by using -1, -2, etc.
Is this sort of scoring method on your horizon?
We also have the (probably) unique position of having a three race
series which has a single race worth double points (ie 1st=200pts).
Admittedly, the single race is 480 nm.
One more thing, we often have races that go into the next day. Are
you going to give the ability to add a day to the finish time like
[+1 3:12:11]?

I actually meant...
1st = 100pts
2nd = 99 pts
3rd = 98 pts, etc

A ha! my previous email is actually not so far off the mark then....
Bit of a side issue and I'm sure Colin won't want to programme up
sailwave to incorporate it but looking at the results of the 1956
olympic results they used a really weird points system. With the
collective brains in this forum, and maybe someone who was alive
then, anyone have any idea how points were awarded in those days???

Simon,
I passed on your query to the Race Committee at Royal Melbourne
Yacht Squadron. They got in touch with the Australian Yachting
Federation (national body) and we received some information
yesterday. RMYS's historian and Dennis Livingston (one of the Race
Officials) are looking into it.
At first glance, it appears to be a high point system that varies
according to the number of entrants. We had a play with the maths
but it wasn't clear what their exact method was.
They are going through the club archives to find the race notes
which should hopefully shed some light on it.
The high point query I posted is a very common method used in
Victoria - why it's usage is so widespread I don't know. In our
case, the widely held opinion is that the low point scoring methods
do not lend themselves to a series which is played out over 4 months
where the number of entrants for each race vary a fair bit. They
seem to prefer a high point system.
Unfortunetly, we are locked into this method for the rest of the
season (July 2003 - June 2004).

It should be easy to do, now that I've got the high point infrastructure in
there, which was added to support the GMORA Rinderle B scoring system. I am
completely bogged down with 'real' work at the moment but want to have a bit
of a session on scoring systems and rating systems (inc simple IMS) as soon
as I can.
Apologies to anybody waiting for a reply to a query; I should be out of the
woods soon...
Regards,
Colin

Hi Mike,
I've added a 'custom high point' points system to mirror the custom low
points system. Like the custom low points system if you end the
specification with two numbers of the same value, all competitors are scored
for those points thereafter; this is common in high point systems.
See http://results.sailwave.com/hp.htm for an example - the spec was
"100,99"; i.e. without the above mentioned feature utilised but as per your
SIs.
DNC/F etc is still set up as for std low point but ignoring that it seems to
work OK. For any series that you use this points system for just set DNC=1
etc etc.
Regards,
Colin
