Thanks for the replies, let me expand the question.
We use this points system over the whole season, in addition to regular scoring. Each boat in each fleet from cats, dinghies to keel boats does participate. The boat with the most points wins the overall club champion.
Since some fleets have smaller numbers participating, if it was not capped at 4 points maximum per race then the best racer in the largest fleet would easily win. It was a compromise to reward the consistently best boats, participation etc and to eliminate the fleet size bias.
The actual formulae we use is:
1 point for each race entered
1 point for each boat beaten to a max of 3
I have been doing this manually for 4 years now, but seeing the answers to some of the questions I was really hoping it could be automated!

Have you looked at the team result publishing option; it can probably get
close to that but in a low point way - the result should be the same though.
