We have a small recreational PHRF fleet at our club. We sail a mixture of individual weekend trophy races and monthly Wednesday night series over the summer and then lump it all together in as season long club championship with a different discard profile. I built two master blw files for our fleet captain and race officers (who also scored the races). One file was used for individual races and series (‘save as’ for each new race or series) and the other was for the season long series. We used the merge command to populate the season series from the individual races and monthly series. Easy.
But … in an effort to encourage participation of the timid, our Notice of Race and SIs allowed racers to declare ‘spinnaker’ or ‘white sail’ handicaps on a race-by-race basis. This was no problem for the individual or monthly series, but when we calculated results for the season-long series, SailWave changed race-by-race handicaps back to a single base handicap in the merged file, typically with a change in the race winner. Grrr. Rather than validating/correcting handicaps for every boat/race combination in the season series, the fleet captain chose to to build an Excel file of combined race and monthly series finishes and calculate season results as a one design series (he could have done that in SailWave, but I had not provided that option as a blw master).
There are options when changing handicaps within a series - will one of the options allow variable handicaps to be protected through a merge, or is this something that was never envisioned in the merge command? Next year’s fleet captain has asked for support and it would be nice to be able to offer a solution for the problem. The simplest might be to go in the other direction, using the the season’s series for all direct data entry and ‘saving as’ for individual races and monthly series, and then deleting superfluous races from the new files. Would our race-by-race handicap declaration still give problems with this approach?
As you say it is not something that was originally envisaged in the merge command.
I could look at building it in, if it is something that is regularly needed but you are the first to have asked for this facility.
Unless you are doing it regularly the effort to manually change it within Sailwave should not be much.
If you press F6 and then R all the ratings in use are displayed so its easy to see when a non standard rating is used.
and you can edit any ratings by selecting the appropriate cell and pressing enter and entering the new rating. After you have done the first the rating box will automatically be selected for subsequent changes
