Different dates for different fleets

I'm hoping I'm just blind to the easy way to do this:

In a season of races we have four series (A, B, C, and D) of four
races each with four different fleets/classes. Since we often have
little wind, and this year a lot of thunderstorms, races are
abandoned or sometimes no one finishes within the time limit,
especially in the slower classes. Our sailing instructions state
that the first race sailed by a fleet is A1, the second A2, etc.
Very quickly as the season gets started, the fleets get out of
sync. One class may be sailing A4, when another is sailing A3 and
another is still trying to get in A1.

It would be great to use the sail number wizard and just put in all
the sail numbers and elapsed times for a given day, and have
Sailwave figure out which race it is for each fleet, but we have
been happily living with the requirement that we enter each fleet
separately because Sailwave requires us to specify which race we are
entering.

The bigger problem is that when the results are published, there is
only one date specified for each race and it looks like all fleets
sialed a partiular race on the same day. Since competitors focus on
how they did on a particular date rather than in say, race B2, it is
very confusing, especially looking back at other than the latest
race.

Is there an easy way to deal with this? For printed results, we
have been simply writing the correct date in with a pen on the
printed sheet. Not elegant, and sometimes quite a pain but it
works. But since most members look at results on the internet, it
requires editing the results which our less than computer adept
scorekeepers are loathe to do. We love Sailwave because you don't
have to know much to use it.

Can anyone help? THANKS!

I don't know if our solution would work for you or not. But if you look at
http://www.bhyc.net/Results/2003%20Tuesday%20Series.htm you will see where
one fleet got in 16 races in July but the other only got in 11 in this
particular series. The only thing to be VERY careful of is to only use the
Score Fleets option. If you use the regular scoring routine all the unsailed
races will be marked as DNC which will mess up the discard/qualification
formulae.

Hope this helps.

Hi (cycscorer),

Not as it stands. When I started Sailwave the idea was that different
fleets we saved in different series and there were some meta tools to
publish across files. Since Sailwave is an MDI app I figured this was OK.
It turns out that it's not and a large part of dev time is spent on a
background task to completely generalise the 'fleet' concept so that in fact
each 'fleet' can have it's own set of races etc etc and 'fleets' can be
defined by an arbitrary set of criteria; e.g. age limits. Just what you
need, but it's not available yet.

For now multiple files is what you need to do to avoid gaps in races etc.

Regards,
Colin
