Different fleets sail different number of races

Sorry if this has all been covered before - or if the answer is
blindingly obvious... (I suspect it's both!)

I am using the fleets feature in v1.57 to avoid having to create
numerous different Sailwave files. At this stage the single-handed
fleet has sailed three races, but the GP14s have only sailed one. Yet
when I "score fleets" it assigns a DNC code to each GP14 for the two
races which didn't happen. Any way round this? Any way to tell the
system that R1 and R2 apply only to fleet (a) and not to fleet (b)?

Thanks!

(York, UK)

I came across the same bug and had to fall back to V1.56 which does not have the bug. I tested V1.58 and found the same problem.

Not sure if this is any help but I have just used v1.58 for its new flight options.
One of the features is the facility to edit a race & set which boats are in which starts.
If you apply a bit of lateral thinking, would it be possible to use this feature to determine that
only S/handed fleet has 'started' in this 'race' then when the GP14's race, they can be added to the
race as a 'second' start & scored accordingly

Just a thought but might be worth a try whilst you are waiting for the results of the next race

Hugh,

I am using Sailwave v1.58 and I do not have this problem. I am trying to
work out why.

If you go to the following link on the Datchet Water SC web site,
http://www.dwsc.co.uk/clubsailing/series/Winter/winter_overall.htm, you will
see the overall results for our Winter Series which show different fleets
having sailed a different number of races and no DNC in unsailed races. If
you care to send me a copy of your Sailwave .BLW file I will take a look and
see if I can identify the differences using Sailwave v1.58

Hi Mark,

Thanks, sorry about that. In these series are you scoring by fleet *and*
scoring all competitors or just scoring by fleet? And to confirm you have
at least one race where all results are blank for all competitors in fleet X
but when you score by fleet it gives them all DNC; is that right?

The bug is the same in both versions.

Race 1 - fleet A and B sail
Race 2 - fleet A sails, fleet B does not.

When you score everything works great. However if you mistakenly enter a result for a Fleet B boat, it correctly scores all other boats in Fleet B as DNC. When you delete all the results from all the competitors and rescore SailWave incorrectly scores all of Fleet B competitors DNC again.

I can send you an example if you need one.

Thanks

Our club uses a handicap system I have not seen before but I rather like it
as it seems extremely fair. Apparently it comes from Canada somewhere.

What makes it unique is that the handicap is adjusted after each event based
on the boats performance.

See
http://www.greenwichyachtclub.co.uk/racing/main.htm

Not sure if Sailwave has the ability to incorporate such a formula but if
possible in a future addition this would be very handy

Terry

Hi Terry,

PH's not in there at present. Some design work been done (see also past SUG
threads about it) and will make one of the next handful of versions. Will
be based on expressions (rather than hardwait certain named schemes) since
no two clubs seem to use the same system

Colin and group members,

I answered I hope this question for Hugh in a private email, but I now
include for Colin and others my findings.

"Hugh,
I have taken a look at your file in Sailwave 1.58 and I have attached a 1.58
version of the file with the modifications I have made. The modifications
do I think what you wanted. Sorry it is in v1.58 but I have had problems in
the past when I have switched versions especially backwards.

I have also attached an HTML page of the overall results so you can quickly
see the results

The things I did:-
1.. I have included a class and sail number for everyone, the sail number
is the persons initials
2.. I cleared the results for each GP helm & crew
3.. I re-entered the GP results using the SAIL NUMBER WIZARD
  4.. Rescored the fleets

I an guessing that you were not using the Sail Number Wizard to enter
results because you had no sail numbers entered and were therefore entering
the results for each competitor individually by clicking in the appropriate
cell. FYI - Sailwave treats DNC codes entered by hand differently to those
entered automatically by Sailwave when scoring the overall results. Those
entered by hand are not overwritten by Sailwave when recalculating series
scores, so I strongly recommend that you leave DNC code to Sailwave

I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,"

Thanks Hugh...

However the problem that we encountered in both 1.57 and 1.58, does not occur in 1.56.

In V1.56/7/8, when using the wizard to enter results for a race in which one fleet did not sail, Sailwave leaves the results for the fleet that did not sail blank. This is correct... If a scorer accidentally enters a result for one boat in the fleet that did not sail and scores the race, Sailwave scores the remaining boats in the fleet that did not sail DNC. This is also correct.

To correct the problem you need to clear the results for selected fleet for selected race. Sailwave does not have such an option, the choices are...

Clear results for selected race
Clear results for all races
Clear results for selected competitor (Clears all races)
Clear results for excluded competitor

The only way to clear the results is to manually edit each result. When you set them to blank and rescore. V1.56 correctly leavses the results blank and ignores the race for that fleet. V1.57 and V1.58 change the competitors to DNC and scores accordingly. Two ways exist to get round the problem. Delete the race and reenter all the results, not acceptable in 100+ boat regattas, or use a scoring code of FDR (Fleer Didnot Race) with points set to zero. Neither solution is acceptable, so we will continue to use V1.56 until it is fixed.

do I think what you wanted.

I don't have the solution, but I'm sure Colin will sooner or later....

Anyway, when I choosed ragatta software my only unalterable demand was import/export possabilities....

So, in a 100+ fleet race, why not export to Excel, delete unwanted results, then import.....

Works, but is not THE solution...

However the problem that we encountered in both 1.57 and 1.58, does not
  occur in 1.56.

In V1.56/7/8, when using the wizard to enter results for a race in which one
fleet did not sail, Sailwave leaves the results for the fleet that did not
sail blank. This is correct... If a scorer accidentally enters a result for
one boat in the fleet that did not sail and scores the race, Sailwave scores
the remaining boats in the fleet that did not sail DNC. This is also
  correct.

To correct the problem you need to clear the results for selected fleet for
selected race. Sailwave does not have such an option, the choices are...

  Clear results for selected race
  Clear results for all races
Clear results for selected competitor (Clears all races)
  Clear results for excluded competitor

The only way to clear the results is to manually edit each result. When you
set them to blank and rescore. V1.56 correctly leavses the results blank and
ignores the race for that fleet. V1.57 and V1.58 change the competitors to
DNC and scores accordingly. Two ways exist to get round the problem. Delete
the race and reenter all the results, not acceptable in 100+ boat regattas,
or use a scoring code of FDR (Fleer Didnot Race) with points set to zero.
Neither solution is acceptable, so we will continue to use V1.56 until it is
  fixed.

Hi Mark,

Ah, I see - the problem is that if you accidently add a result to a
competitor in a group of boats that did not sail you can't clear it with
clearing a load of other stuff. The clearing tool is a lot more flexible in
the coalface (1.59) I'm developing now (including clearing a single cell)
and also there is a right-click+clearresult menu. One way around it if you
want to use 1.57 or 1.58betaOct10 is open the .blw file with notepad, locate
the result in question and remove that line completey.

In 1.57, to trigger the DNC code in the fleets which didn't sail (and
thereby cause chaos) you don't have to manually insert anything. All you
have to do is press "Score" by mistake instead of "score fleets"! Glad I've
worked that one out, because I didn't think I'd entered anything in those
cells.

So I'll try to be ** v e r y c a r e f u l ** from now on - but if I do it
again at least I now have some ideas on how to solve it. Thank you, all, and
here's to v1.59!

Hi Martin,

The problem is that if you accidently enter a DNC (etc) by hand in a group
of boats that did in fact not sail, you can't clear it. Thgis is fixed in
1.59 (not available) which has very a flexible cell clearing tool... see
this screen shot...

I don't have the solution, but I'm sure Colin will sooner or later....

Anyway, when I choosed ragatta software my only unalterable
demand was import/export possabilities....

So, in a 100+ fleet race, why not export to Excel, delete
unwanted results, then import.....

Works, but is not THE solution...

  Thanks Hugh...

However the problem that we encountered in both 1.57 and 1.58, does not
  occur in 1.56.

In V1.56/7/8, when using the wizard to enter results for a race
in which one
fleet did not sail, Sailwave leaves the results for the fleet
that did not
sail blank. This is correct... If a scorer accidentally enters
a result for
one boat in the fleet that did not sail and scores the race,
Sailwave scores
the remaining boats in the fleet that did not sail DNC. This is also
  correct.

To correct the problem you need to clear the results for
selected fleet for
selected race. Sailwave does not have such an option, the choices are...

  Clear results for selected race
  Clear results for all races
Clear results for selected competitor (Clears all races)
  Clear results for excluded competitor

The only way to clear the results is to manually edit each
result. When you
set them to blank and rescore. V1.56 correctly leavses the
results blank and
ignores the race for that fleet. V1.57 and V1.58 change the
competitors to
DNC and scores accordingly. Two ways exist to get round the
problem. Delete
the race and reenter all the results, not acceptable in 100+
boat regattas,
or use a scoring code of FDR (Fleer Didnot Race) with points
set to zero.
Neither solution is acceptable, so we will continue to use
V1.56 until it is
  fixed.

  Colin and group members,

I answered I hope this question for Hugh in a private email, but I now
include for Colin and others my findings.

  "Hugh,
I have taken a look at your file in Sailwave 1.58 and I have
attached a 1.58
version of the file with the modifications I have made. The
modifications
do I think what you wanted. Sorry it is in v1.58 but I have
had problems in
the past when I have switched versions especially backwards.

I have also attached an HTML page of the overall results so you
can quickly
  see the results

  The things I did:-
1.. I have included a class and sail number for everyone,
the sail number
  is the persons initials
2.. I cleared the results for each GP helm & crew
3.. I re-entered the GP results using the SAIL NUMBER WIZARD
     4.. Rescored the fleets

I an guessing that you were not using the Sail Number Wizard to enter
results because you had no sail numbers entered and were
therefore entering
the results for each competitor individually by clicking in the
appropriate
cell. FYI - Sailwave treats DNC codes entered by hand
differently to those
entered automatically by Sailwave when scoring the overall
results. Those
entered by hand are not overwritten by Sailwave when
recalculating series
scores, so I strongly recommend that you leave DNC code to Sailwave

I look forward to hearing from you.

     Hi Hugh,

If that's happening, it's a bug in 1.57. Cna you try the 1.58 beta

Nice!!

But, why not use "windows select/unselect" by click on a cell, push shift and click on the last cell and then push delete. Then you could "popup" the shown window annd ask "Do you want to delete this fields?". Just a suggestion..... Could look, and work, more like a spreadsheet then....

Nice!!

But, why not use "windows select/unselect" by click on a cell,
push shift and click on the last cell and then push delete. Then
you could "popup" the shown window annd ask "Do you want to
delete this fields?". Just a suggestion..... Could look, and
work, more like a spreadsheet then....

Regards!
