We calculate OOD score as the average of races sailed, which works fine. However, we then want to discard the OODs before any races sailed. Is there a way to do this? At the moment, the OOD score is treated like any other race.
Example - Discard after 5, results are 2, OOD, 4, 7, 2, 1 OOD=3.2
Discard Rule 0,0,0,0,0,1 Includes OOD, discards 7th
But we want to discard OOD first, and take 7th in preference.

So in a series with 10 races to count someone who does 10 races plus a duty is in a worse position than someone who does 11 races? Seems a bit harsh. Effectively you are only giving average points to those who happen to enter however many races it is to count, and those that do more than that get no compensation for doing their duty.
On the original question, I’m not aware of a discard this code first flag in Sailwave.
Under "Edit race" you can go into each start in each race and there is
an option to "Discard me first" which will discard that RACE first (thus
allowing you to ignore complete races for a start by setting to "Discard
me first" and increasing the number of discards).
However, what you want is an option under a particular score to discard
the SCORE first, even if it is not a "worst" score. I don't believe
there is such an option. A way to get what you want would be to set up a
second OOD scoring code (say OOD2) and set it to average points of
non-discarded races and then set your standard OOD code to a very high
number so it gets discarded first. So, I think you'd want your SIs to
say something like - OOD gets same as DSQ unless you have more OODs than
discards, in which case the points assigned will be equal to the average
of non-discarded scores. Then, you could go in manually and for any boat
with more OODs than discards you'd have to change the code from OOD to
OOD2. A bit clumsy but at least you'd get what you want. Per the
penultimate sentence of rule A2 you'd want to discard the earlier of the
OODs, so changing later OODs to OOD2 would be easy.

Yes, that’s true - but those are the club rules apparently, long ago before my time …
Thanks Art - I’ll give that a go and see. We don’t have a lot of boats in the series so a bit of manual intervention will probably be fine.
