DNC scoring

At the Okanagan Model Sailboat Assn in Kelowna B.C. Canada, we would like to penalize a skipper only lightly for sitting out a race or two during an afternoons regatta. This would encourage this person to help start or to judge a race that he is sitting out.. ( a DNC with low point scoring)

Our examination of the DNC scoring in Sailwave version 1.54 and 1.55 shows that the calcuation which reads :

"average points for all races + N"

which to my mind at least might mean :

(number of points in total / number of races) plus N

However , it appears that the calculation that actually occurs is:

(number of points in total plus N) / the number of races

The former calculation produces at least a one point penalty for a DNC while the latter calculation produces only a very small fractional point penalty for a DNC .

What actually was the intent of the DNC scoring of "average points for all races + N ??

The above question also applies to the DNC scoring concerning "average points for all races except DNC + N"

Thanks for your great efforts with the sailwave program.

kind regards,
James Anderson

James,

You might be better off looking at the scoring code OOD. I use the option
'Average points for all except DNC'.

Use of this code will I think cover what you are trying to achieve and also
have the benefit of actually identifying those skippers who do actually help
with the race management.

Hi James,

You are right, my wording is ambiguous and also that the implementation
(somewhat surprisingly to me) is (Total+N)/Races. As to the original
intention and why... I'm not sure; I probably added it that way because I
was asked to do so, so I can't unconditionally change it for fear of
breaking it for somebody else.

I'll add the other interpretations as well. Apologies for the
inconvenience. For now, you could make N a bigger number I guess... I'll
ad a FAQ or technical note to make things more explicit.

Thanks for the feedback.
