Our organization uses the sailwave software, but I do not, so I apologize if I'm posting a question that does not apply here.
Our organization occasionally runs "pursuit" style races, where the handicap is built in via staggered starts, with the goal being everyone finishing nearly together at the end of the race. We've found this helpful for new sailors who are somewhat stressed in standard starts, and often very depressed at being way behind everyone else at the finish.
The challenge has been developing the handicaps, in that Portsmouth ratings, for instance, do not take into account "Fred's" old sails, or the fact that "George" is twice the sailor in his Laser than is "Sam."
So we've worked on tweaking our handicaps, with the best sailors waiting longer to start, and the newer sailors starting right away. I have to say that heading down to the finish line in a pile is way more fun than finishing alone and finding out how I did later after the numbers have been crunched.
Under this system, the sailor with the longest wait at the start should feel somewhat honored, but we do have complaints on occasion, because the handicapping can seem to be arbitrary.
Does the sailwave software have any options for "scoring" which would take into account equipment condition and sailor experience? I'm very interested to hear opinions and suggestions about this style of race also. Thanks!
This matches the question I posted last week regarding CHRF style handicaps. Does sailwave support these pursuit races with handicaps adjusted for actual performance? In CHRF all the boats are compared to the middle boat in each race.
If the group doesn't know the answer, how do we contact the actual developer?
Thanks
Paul

Paul,
Currently Sailwave does not support calculation of pursuit/rabbit start
times. It is in the development list.
The developer does read and respond to messages posted on this group.
However his real job does get in the way and a response may take a few
days.
Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Paul
I have attached a copy of a spreadsheet which was written by David Wilkins of Rutland SC
I use this for most pursuit races & it is particularly helpful for calculating starts for large fleets
The spreadsheet is based upon PYs so not sure about personal handicaps
If your PH system is based upon a PY adjustment then you can set up each competitor as a ‘class’ and enter their boat PY +/- their PH
Regards
Ralph

This matches the question I posted last week regarding CHRF style handicaps. Does sailwave support these pursuit races with handicaps adjusted for actual performance? In CHRF all the boats are compared to the middle boat in each race.
If the group doesn’t know the answer, how do we contact the actual developer?
Thanks
