Dot in "Save as" filename

There is a rule of thumb that says don't use more than one dot in a file name nevertheless my.little.document.docx is a perfectly valid Windows file name. In fact Microsoft itself uses them in, for example, web.config.old. So I would humbly suggest that assuming anything after a dot is a file extension and removing or replacing it is not strictly correct and may have unfortunate consequences as the OP discovered.

To avoid confusion I never use a dot in a filename.
My preference is for _ where I need a space (I used to have a
programme that got upset if you presented a filename with spaces
such as ‘my little document.xxx’

  If I need to show versions then I use - . e.g. 'document-v1.xxx
