Hi all,
my name is Thomas Koenig and I am the current chairman of the Formual 16 Catamaran Class Association. Right now, I am trying to understand, how the dpi penalty system in sailwave works. If a sailor has received a dpi penalty, for some reason Sailwave shows different results for all the other sailors. Second, I don’t know, if I have to enter the results on the finish line for those sailors as well or leave the field blank and just enter the dpi points in the fields below.
Thank’s for your help
Thomas
Hi Thomas,
So I can try to be more helpful could you please make available the
wording from the SI’s in question.
It sounds from your description as if you need to set one of the
options on the Properties tab of the 'Edit scoring code’ window '.
Can you check if for the scoring code DPI the check box alongside '* This
is a rule where A6.2 applies (other boats scores are not changed)* ’
has a tick or not.
Kind regards,
Huw

Thomas,
It doesn't seem like you got much help yet. Let me give it a shot.
"DPI" means Discretionary Penalty Imposed and by definition (because it
involves discretion) isn't defined as to the specifics (DPI is included
in rule A11 even though for fleet racing there are no discretionary
penalties in the rulebook since SIs often allow for it). With some
penalties (such as DSQ) the scores of other boats change but with other
penalties (such as the Scoring Penalty under rule 44.3) the scores of
other boats do not change. So, whether you should have the scores of
other boats change will depend on the written instructions from the
protest committee. The PC really has to tell you precisely what the DPI
score should be as if they don't there isn't any default provision that
you can apply. [Rule 64.1 says the penalty is DSQ unless some other
penalty applies but presumably your SIs say that for a particular breach
the penalty shall be at the discretion of the PC, which becomes your
"some other penalty" for purposes of 64.1. If the SIs state a specific
penalty then it won't be "at the discretion of the PC" and won't be a DPI.]
Sailwave allows implementing penalties with a unique code for each. So,
if you had two different DPI penalties (admittedly very rare) you would
need a DPI-1 and a DPI-2, for example. Sailwave gives a unique
calculation method for each scoring code. That means, for example, that
if two boats get redress and the method of calculation is different for
each (which it very well could be) then you will need a RDG-1 and a RDG-2.
You define penalties in Sailwave the same way you define other scoring
codes. Look under Setup|Scoring System|Scoring Codes. That is where you
can setup your unique discretionary penalty. When you select a code and
click on Edit you get options. Under the Properties tab you can check
whether the scores of other boats should change. Under the Method tab
you can define what the resulting score should be. Always double check
that the scoring is doing what you think it should because some of the
"Method" options might not do exactly what you think they do (in older
editions some didn't seem to work at all when I played around so I found
that double-checking is always a good idea).
If you have further trouble you can always attach your BLW file and
there are a number of helpful folks here, one of whom will probably look
at it. [Remember that members here are spread around the world so you
may need to wait until daytime elsewhere in the world to get a response.]
