Mike Butterfield/Colin,
I hope I can articulate this clearly. If we want to double the
importance of a race relative to another (which I think is the aim) what
are we actually saying wrt a Low Points Scoring System?
Argument [1]: That the points gap between two places say, 1st & 2nd,
should be harder to close; in the preceding lead-up races points were
'easy' to get i.e. then we need to weight the race by 0.5 thus 1st = O.5
pts, 2nd = 1 pt, etc. Effectively a 1st placed skipper has to beat a
competitor by more places to close a points gap of 1.0; his competitor
has to come at least 3rd! Competitor gets 1.5pts; 1st placed Winner gets
0.5 difference =1.
Argument [2]: If we double the points for e.g. the last race by applying
a weighting of x 2 it means 1st gets 2.0pts, 2nd 4.0 pts etc.
Effectively a first placed skipper will now be 4 points ahead of a 3rd
place. So he really only needs to beat a competitor by 1 place to get a
2pts advantage.
I think I'm going around in square circles!

I know what you mean but I think the way to look at is is that you get
hot hard for your result in the last race; i.e. in a low point system
you get more points added than a usual race, so you really need to fo
well...
BV: you can tell Sialwave ehether or not to multiply/divide race weights
in the scoring system setup. I'll fix the < 1 bug.

Option 2 is correct.
The double points in the olumpic system is to make the race more inportant as it is harder to get fewer points.
As you say a 3rd gets 6 points.
This overcomes the earlier carried over scores.
The whole Idea is to try to get the boat that wins on the last day to win the event.
In the Dubai regatta it was a failure.
There were 91 boats in the fleet racing and 10 in the final (in the actual olympics there would only be abour 20 starters) The points difference carried over was so great the final race did not make that much difference.

We had a similar situation here last year in a 4 race event, no discards, last race (a long distance race) to count double. when the results were calculated there were 2 boats on equal points, one of which had won the last (double points race). The tie break caused some problems.
The last race winning boat scored 2 points for this race - which is a worse score than the 1 point for winning one of the other races, which is not really favouring the result of the last race! On this basis the boat that won the last (deemed more important, because we scored it double points) race came second in the event.
We hastily rescored the tie break, using finishing places rather than race scores - which gave the same result. We had one unhappy boat crew to deal with. This year the tie break will be the result of the long distance race
