After all competitors have been entered into a new series, how do I
check for duplicate sail numbers before everyone heads out on the water
and before I run into trouble when beginning to enter results from Race
#1? Or, is it possible to setup Sailwave to automatically check for
duplicate sail numbers as each new competitor is entered? Thanks.
There used to be some automatic code but it was faulty and its disabled at
present. Easiest way is just order the series by sailno (click sailno title
col) and scan donw it...
I'll review the auto stuff and/or add a tool cos its comes up now and again.
Regards,
Colin

Hi Colin
There is a further issue around this subject
It can be quite a problem when running single class races where they have a long sail number eg Lasers
I have just had a discussion with the scorers for the NSSA regatta in July & had to suggest that they put the 6 digit sail numbers in Excel with the first 2 digits in one column & next 4 in another column, so that we can then sort by the last 4 digits.
What would be really great is if the “match last n characters” option in the Sail number wizard, could be applied to the sorting process (or something similar) so that 174321 & 164321 could appear together
Regards
Ralph

The French software FReg2007 allows 2 identifiers. For Lasers, you can use as first identifier the full 6-digits number, for the second, only the last 4 digits.
You can record finishing boats by either 4 or 6 digits.
If there are any duplicates in the 4-digits numbers, I just clear the second identifier for these boast, so they are just rejected and only the 6-digits number is allowed.
Problem for large fleets, the conversion is not automated, control of duplicates works well.
Another use of these function is to enter the sail number with nationality letters as 1st identifier, and the number only as 2nd identifier. Once again, when there are duplicate second identifiers, these duplicates are cleared for both boats.
To avoid identification problems, the committee is asked to record full numbers / nationality letters as far as possible, time permitting In addition, they receive a list of entries with these special cases manually marked, so even if one of the boats concerned is recorded during a ‘hot’ part of a finish, they can complete identification soon, we always hope that ‘ht’ phases don’t involve duplicates. A committee member may be especially in charge of theses special cases, if any.

Thanks Phil. It occurs to me that now the sailno wizard is generic - in that you can choose the field it works on now (not just sailno) - sailwave can have multiple id fields too…
