E% C%

I think I can safely say that E% and C% were not one of my best
ideas. I'm going to replace them with a single measure which is how
much faster you needed to go to tie with the winner - taking your
rating value into account; i.e. it's not just a difference of your
and the winners elapsed times. The column name I've come up with
is "-Ewin"; i.e. difference in elapsed to win.

Example for corrected = rating*elapsed

winner elapsed = 100sec
winner rating = 10
winner corrected = 1000sec

your elapsed = 100sec
your rating = 20
your corrected = 2000sec

your elapsed needed to win was 1000sec/20 = 50sec
so your -Ewin is 100sec - 50sec = 50sec.

i.e. your elapsed time was the same as the winners elapsed time
(100sec) but you needed to sail the race 50sec faster to win (tie in
fact).

Similarly, could compute Rwin - the rating you actually needed to win
based on the elapsed time you put in - is that useful?

CJ

We would definitely find RWin useful (from the committee's perspective,
more than Ewin). Thanks

The old scoring programs we used had a column designating this
as "seconds behind" (the leader of course).
Nobody commented me about missing it, but I think
for us it is more useful than E% C%.

Colin:

When publishing results from previous sailwave .blw files with 1.42b1 I
now have the Ave Speed column (probably should be Avg Speed) regardless,
it is identical for all boats in a given fleet. Can this be turned off,
and or what does it represent? I am receiving numbers like:

     0
  2.05/sec

And again they are identical for all boats in the same fleet?
Thanks in advance.

Warmest regards,

-Doug Gordon

Hi Doug,

This is because it's calculating a per second figure. It's changed to a per
hour figure in 1.42 but not uploaded yet. If you enter your races times in
metres you'll probably get something sensible with the version you have.

Colin,

I would find the estimate of the 'Yardstick' required to win with the
elapsed time sailed a useful feature. This will allow a Personal Handicap
system to be developed, which is something I have exchanged messages with
you on before.

Huw

Colin & Huw,

I too, would be very interested in the ability to calculate personal
handicaps for a one design class (Optimists!!). Currently, the personal
handicap is worked by calculating a factor, which if the elapsed time was
multiplied by, would give the same elapsed time as the winner on scratch if
the race duration was 100 minutes (6000 secs) of sailing. This new factor
(personal handicap rating) is weighted 1/5 to 4/5ths of the previous rating
to lessen the impact of a spurious result. I use a custom formulae in
Sailwave scoring viz. e-(r/6000*e) to score the next race having entered the
new factor (in seconds) as the rating. Calculating this rating is a pain and
is done separately using an Excel spreadsheet. It means double capturing
elapsed times. Ultimately, I guess, all I am doing is deriving your
'yardstick', basing it on 100 minutes and weighting it1/5:4/5ths with the
previous one.

I haven't yet got to grips with wind strength ratings. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thumbs up for a great code.

Hi Rob,

Sorry for delay, this one slipped through.

The RYA are just about to publish a spec for software to do PY returns. As
a part of this I expect personal handicaps to drop out as a side-effect.
I'll post progress on this site.

For wind indexed ratings see FAQ 15 - if that doesn't help, please feel free
to get back to me.

Colin
