edit crew

Is it possible to edit the crews name over a series of races as in my club CHSC often the crew changes from week to week

Thank you in advance

David Woolston

Hi David,

All data can be edited at any time. Just double click in the

field that you want edit, in your case the crew field. You can
either replace or add additional crew names. I used to do this in
the past. I am not sure of the amount of data that you can put in
the field but I have managed at least 3 in the past.

Kind regards,

Huw

Huw,

Our club SI’s specify that points in a series are credited to the helmsman, not the boat. (2 man dinghies)

Several helms have 2 or 3 crews who sail with them during a series depending on availability.

When scoring on Sailwave I either display the ‘latest’ of the crews who sailed; or, as you suggest, populate the field with all crews who have sailed with a particular helm during the series. However neither method provides a record of who crewed in each individual race.

My ‘goal’ is to publish a series summary table which, for each helm, gives the names of all crews who have sailed in the series; and individual race tables which show which crew was sailing in each race.

Trouble is I can’t work out how to do it!

Any ideas?

Hi Howard,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately there is no automated

way of doing what you would like in Sailwave.

A way of working that might work for you is as follows:

  • in the Crew field/column is the name of the current person

crewing, i.e . the person crewing for that race for
    example Micky Mouse

  • other people who crew are noted in the Notes field/column

together with an annotation of which race(s) they crewed for the
helm, for example Huw Pearce[R1, R3-7] | Howard Steavenson [R2,
    R8-10]
Hope this suggestion might be of some help. Although note that in
the Series Summary the current crew will be listed in the crew
field/column as well as on the individual race results. Publishing a
field means it is published on all Sailwave outputs.

Please note that you can change the default Sailwave column names by
clicking on the Columns button on the tool bar and and then editing
the appropriate field column and entering an alternative name.

    Kind regards,

    Huw

Can it be done? - In life almost anything is possible given enough
effort so it is possible. BUT, you might find it isn't worth the effort.

MY SUGGESTION
Score and post each race separately. Therefore, once the results for a
race have been posted it won't need to be changed (our local summer
series has 21 race webpages and 1 series webpage). Each race can have
different crew.

In your file have two "Crew" columns. One will have all the crew to date
and the other will have only the crew for the current race (they can
have the same title heading of "Crew" but you'd decide which one to
unhide when publishing). When publishing race results publish only the
"current race" column and when publishing series results publish only
the "all to date" column. If you have to republish an earlier race (due
to protests or redress or typos) you might have to do some retyping and
switching names but that shouldn't be a common occurrence.

I think what you WANT is to have different crew for different races and
yet have all of the races on a single page. I don't believe that is
possible.

Art

PS - For the record, I find the "races and series on a single webpage"
unduly long and not always easy to navigate. So, I think a separate
webpage for each race is always better - it looks better and is easier
to navigate. If you go that route then you are only publishing the
current race at any one time so my alternate columns idea should be
"relatively" simple to implement.

Hi David,

We occasionally have a similar requirement, (in our case when Helms switch rigs, allowed in certain series) as stated there is no race result specific field you can use as these are only for the results.

Our simple solution is to refer to the Race Notes section per race. This is a field that appears at the top of a race table. eg RS400 234 Crew - D Smith. Example attached.

This may be suitable if only occurs for a few boats in a race. It at least keeps everything in one file. Would suggest you leave crew as Multiple names or Various.
