Elapsed change to win

Colin,

One of the things that we currently (in Excel) do is to work out the
elapsed time to win based on the rating. This is for time-on-time.

The only difference I can see between what you do in your "elapsed
time to win" and ours is that we will run it after the first few
finishers and not after everyone has finished (or DNF'd).

Our race directors would like a tool that could give them this
ability.

This is because the difference between the leaders and the tail
enders in our races in usually in hours. Hence, we want to be able
to announce the top three in each division when it is clear that the
tail enders cannot possibly be in a position to win.

The reason for this is that we want boats to stick around for the
announcement of provisional results before headin home - our races
usually end up 100 miles away in Tasmania.

To do this, we use the rating (as you do) and the leading boat's
finish time (as you do) to work out the elapsed time the tailender
would need to win (actually, we do 2nd and 3rd as well). When it is
clear that the top three places aren't going to change, we set the
provisional results, everyone has a beer and the fastest crews jump
back onboard and head back north. We, of course, hang around until
everyone has safely finished.

So, could your "elapsed time to win" be extended to cover a
situtation where people who haven't finished aren't classed as DNF or
with an exotic time? Big ask, I know - but I'm being pushed.

Hi Mike,

I'll think about how I can rearrange what I've got to get the calculated
data earlier; i.e. without scoring the series. I like the idea though.
It's similar to something else I've been mooting which is to add a column to
a series called Best - and it's value is the best results that competitor
can get at the end of the series based on his results so far; i.e. in
essence give everybody firsts for the remainder of the series and score it.

Colin
